Description

Here's another spellbinding Chardonnay from Tassie young gun Marco Lubiana!

Marco pulls this Chardonnay from two adjoining estate blocks in the Derwent Valley, both farmed biodynamically and both around the 25 year mark. The soils shift from gravelly mudstone into lighter alluvial material, and that mix tends to give him a nice balance of fruit power and acidity to work with each year.

After the cool, low yielding 2023 season, 2024 was a return to something more typical. Yields were better, flavour ripeness was easier to hit, and the winemaking followed a pretty relaxed path. A small tweak for 2024 was giving some of the fruit a light crush before pressing, aiming to pull a bit more flavour and texture from the skins. The rest stayed familiar wild ferment straight to French oak (a mix of barriques and larger formats, with about 12% new), full malo, and almost a year on lees before a short rest in tank.

The wine feels more open and approachable than the 2023 release smoother acidity, a little extra weight through the mid palate, and just enough phenolic grip to keep things tidy. A quick splash in a decanter helps it stretch its legs.

Derwent Valley. All estate fruit. All biodynamic. All good.

Soft and slippery, medium weight and energetic, minerally style of chardonnay. Crisp edges, plush core, stone fruit, ginger-lemon tea, a dash of white pepper, some nougat and vanilla cream gently settles in too. Finishes with fennel and a bit of peppery herbs. Good extension of flavour, excellent flow, very elegant as a comment. Excellent.

    2024 Marco Lubiana Chardonnay

Delicious. Wonderful balance between fruit and acid with trademark Tasmanian minerality.

Vineyard: Biodynamic Lubiana Estate Vineyard, Derwent Valley: A blend of two blocks that neighbour each other. The terroir ranges from gravel mudstone caramel clay to sandy alluvial mudstone. Both blocks are 25 years old with a mix of clones.

The 2024 season in a nutshell was a return to normal conditions, coming off a very cool and mild 2023 season. The spring/early summer was fairly typically with rain and sunshine - not too hot or cold. This led into a dry warm summer most days in the mid to high 20’s. The chardonnay blocks were all handpicked in the middle of March 2024. The fruit was very clean, with the yields of whites up compared to the dismal 2023 season. The winemaking was very easy as the fruit was in fantastic condition. The chardonnay from 2024 are very different compared to the 2023. More fruit power, smoother acid and generosity, this is coming from the sunny season. The wines were almost made in the same way as previously minus some experimentation with crushing the fruit before pressing. The idea was to add more flavour from the skins and solids for fermentation. The 2024 has more texture to it due to this small experimentation. Other than that the juice was sent to French oak barrels on solids (228L and some portion of large format oak, little new oak 12%) , wild fermentation, full Malo, 11 months on lees, 2 months in tank, filtered and bottled on site with free sulphur around 20ppm. The resulting wine is very drinkable, a touch of air is needed as the phenolics are a bit tight. This wine should develop well but I think most bottles will get consumed quickly as slightly lower acid has made the wine very approachable on release.

Marco Lubiana

Marco Lubiana is the latest of his bloodline to take up winemaking. The Lubianas have made wine in Italy since the 1800s, with Marco's father Steve founding his acclaimed biodynamic wine label, Stefano Lubiana, in Tasmania in 1990.

Marco has a degree in Oenology and Viticulture and biodynamic farming in his blood. His wines are carefully farmed and brought to bottle with a mostly natural methodology. An established and well-known vineyard recently purchased by the Lubianas is the source of the fruit. His first releases are incredibly good. Clearly the grape doesn't fall far from the vine.
