Description

Slate Hill is what happens when a Mosel legend and a Clare Valley dynasty share a 30-year friendship and a love of Riesling. Ernst Loosen of Dr. Loosen and the Barry family met at the London Wine Fair back in 1995, and after years of making the serious Wolta Wolta together they added this one: a juicier, more approachable Riesling that still carries all their attention to detail.

The fruit comes off the Barrys' Lodge Hill vineyard, which Jim Barry bought in 1977 because he was sure it would grow some of Clare's best Riesling. It sits 480 metres up on the eastern ranges, on loam and clay over slate bedrock roughly 900 million years old. Since the first release the idea has been German-inspired: wild ferment in stainless steel, a touch of natural sweetness kept for succulence, then a long, patient rest on lees with no oak.

The 2024 is only the second release, and it's a cracker. Peach, lime zest and orange blossom up front, a bit of white pepper, then a generous middle that's kept tight by crunchy acidity and a salty, mineral finish. A different take on Clare Riesling - plusher and more textural than the bone-dry norm, with a big 97 points from James Suckling to back it up. Serious value at the price.

97 points
"The palate has a lovely mid-palate generosity cut through with scintillating acidity and a long, lush finish... A fine bottling with early drinking appeal."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

97 points - "Aromas of fresh peach, citrus and lime zest, orange blossom, fresh herbs, white pepper and a spicy, nervy backbone. The palate has a lovely mid-palate generosity cut through with scintillating acidity and a long, lush finish, with fleshy stone fruit underpinned by a mineral, slightly salty drive. A fine bottling with early drinking appeal. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Tasting Note
The favourable conditions of the 2024 season are reflected in an inviting and layered bouquet, where ripe white peach, nectarine and guava take centre stage. Citrus notes of preserved lemon and blood orange emerge with air, woven through nuances of almond meal, crushed river stone and a delicate floral lift. Subtle hints of lemon thyme and verbena provide freshness and aromatic definition.

The palate is expansive yet poised, opening with generous stone fruit flavours before revealing layers of citrus curd, pink grapefruit and orange blossom. A supple texture carries the fruit seamlessly across the palate, while fine mineral tension and bright natural acidity draw the wine towards a long, savoury finish. Notes of wet chalk, citrus pith and a subtle saline edge linger, providing focus and persistence. Richly flavoured yet precise, the wine balances the generosity of the vintage with the hallmark freshness and drive of Clare Valley Riesling.

Vineyard
The name Slate Hill comes from the German Schieferhügel, a nod to the steep slate slopes synonymous with the Mosel and to the distinctive terrain of the Wolta Wolta property in Clare Valley, where the Riesling is grown. Fruit is drawn from blocks surrounding the original Wolta Wolta Riesling site, selected as the LoosenBarry project expanded.

Winemaking
The inaugural 2023 Slate Hill established the blueprint for the wine. The Riesling was fermented in stainless steel before being held cold on gross lees for two years without stirring, allowing it to build texture and complexity while retaining its vibrant fruit and freshness.

About LoosenBarry
The LoosenBarry collaboration has always been about pushing Riesling beyond the familiar. Bringing together the Barry family’s deep connection to Clare Valley and Ernst Loosen’s generations of Riesling knowledge from the Mosel, the project began with Wolta Wolta—a wine inspired by traditional German techniques, interpreted through an Australian lens.

After a decade working together on Wolta Wolta, Slate Hill emerged as the natural next step. Conceived as a more approachable companion to Wolta Wolta, it carries the same spirit of experimentation and ambition, while placing greater emphasis on freshness, generosity and early drinking appeal.

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
