Description

Will Gilbert and Angus Vinden have been tinkering away at this collab for a few years now, and while it began as a bit of a side project, this latest white shows just how dialled-in things have become.

Half Semillon from the old Somerset Vineyard in the Hunter. Half Sauvignon Blanc from high-altitude Orange. Made separately, blended blind, and somehow it lands spot on.

Angus’s Semillon was fermented in concrete egg, then left to rest in old French oak for 15 months with solids and partial MLF. Will’s Sauv Blanc was wild-fermented in foudre and amphora, no temp control, plenty of solids, regular stirring, and a bit of MLF in the mix too.

It's a textural, elegant white that trades on feel more than fruit. It’s layered but not heavy, bright without being sharp. You get citrus peel, a bit of grip, some leesy weight with classic Hunter Semillon cut and zip.

Either for casual summer sipping or if you want to geek out, there's plenty of complexity here too. The best white release under this collab banner, no doubt about it.

95 points
"50/50% semillon made by Angus Vinden, fermented in a concrete egg/sauvignon blanc made by Will Gilbert, fermented in seasoned oak barrels. The result is an expansive, gently textural wine with finger lime, beeswax and bright gooseberry flavours balanced by cleansing, integrated acidity and a touch of citrus curd. There is a breath of fragrant oak which sits beautifully within the context of the wine, enhancing its interest and appeal."

New lease on an old combo

Yeah really lovely blend. A bit of wet hay offset with and zippy lime sherbet. Excellent stuff - should be even better in a couple of years.

Semillon from the Somerset vineyard is fermented in Concrete eggs, before 15 months in neutral French oak with fine solids and partial MLF. Crazy, I know.

&

Sauvignon blanc fermented in foudre and Amphora sans temp control, with lots of solids, battonage and partial MLF.

Vinden Estate

Angus Vinden, the dynamic young winemaker of Vinden Wines, is redefining this beloved Hunter Valley winery. Taking over from his father a few years ago, Angus has infused fresh energy into the family label, producing exciting, modern wines that are garnering attention from the country's leading wine scribes.

He focuses on the Hunter Valley's classic Semillon and Shiraz, excelling with Tempranillo and even Chenin Blanc while exploring these varieties with a creativity and flair rarely seen in the region. Angus expanded the estate with the purchase of the historic Somerset Vineyard, a vineyard with a storied past, having provided the fruit for some of the region’s most acclaimed wines over the last 50+ years. It is a very good thing for the region that this iconic site is now in Gus' hands.

Vinden Wines is a vibrant blend of tradition and innovation, making it hands down one of the Hunter Valley's most exciting up-and-coming labels.
