Description

Cool-climate Shiraz done right. Luke Lambert’s Crudo Shiraz is bright, spicy, and effortlessly drinkable, offering a Rhône-like balance of perfume, freshness, and savoury detail. It’s the perfect entry point into Lambert’s style - more approachable in its youth than his collectable Syrah, but still packed with personality.

Sourced from 22-year-old vines on the granite soils of Denton Vineyard, the fruit was fermented with just 10% whole bunches to keep the focus on spicy blueberry fruit and fine, mineral-laced tannins. Maturation took place in huge 5000L seasoned barrels, and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

This year it's all blue fruits, black pepper, and a wisp of reduction, all wrapped in silky, talcy tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. It’s supple, fleshy, and built for drinking now, but with enough tension to hold up in the cellar.

Lambert describes it as drinking “a little like a good Dolcetto” which is a pretty good call if you're thinking about weight, freshness and lift. Lovers of Luke's wines and/or cool climate Shiraz should back up the truck.

"A bit of plushness, very dark and brooding, but also a clean, cool finish. Warming drinking, charming drinking. Savoury syrah here we go."

Lots of black olive, salted liquorice, dried seaweed, smoked paprika, a touch of game meat, some garam masala spice and then, yes, then, the black plum, dark cherry, dashes of cola. A swirl of tannin through the palate, gently grippy, some light-smoky minerality shot through. A bit of plushness, very dark and brooding, but also a clean, cool finish. Warming drinking, charming drinking. Savoury syrah here we go.

The very best value Syrah money can buy? Yes.

It is next level quality for the price. It’s medium bodied, full fruited but trim, nothing in excess, fragrant Shiraz. Mind boggling how this wine isn’t a lot more. So good.

Lambert Wines

Luke Lambert is one of Australia’s most instinctive winemakers, known for pure, site-driven Chardonnay, Syrah and Nebbiolo from granite-rich Yarra Valley vineyards. His philosophy is simple: let the vineyard lead, keep the winemaking minimal, and preserve the connection between glass and place.

A long-time admirer of Piedmont’s greats, Lambert has made Nebbiolo his calling card, crafting Australia’s benchmark example from Denton Vineyard since 2008. In 2017, he and partner Rosalind Hall planted Sparkletown, a steep, rocky amphitheatre dedicated entirely to Nebbiolo, with the first release still years away.

Everything is done with restraint — hand-picking, wild fermentation, long macerations, large old oak, no fining or filtration. “I’m just trying to make something beautiful,” Lambert says. The result is wines of clarity, perfume and quiet power that have made him one of the most respected names in Australian wine.
