Description

CBDB stands for Chenin Blanc Dynamic Blend, though these days it’s 100% Chenin from start to finish. The name’s a nod to the vineyard - a certified biodynamic site up in Yallingup that’s more paddock than picture-perfect row. There’s no trellising, no sprays, and no real control. It’s all native flora, roaming farm animals, and vines doing their thing. Nic Peterkin’s been working with this site for years now, and it shows.

The fruit gets picked by hand, chilled overnight, and pressed gently as whole bunches. Wild yeast kicks off fermentation, which takes place in a mix of old barriques and amphora. There's no malo here, but the wine stays on lees for about 10 months, stirred every now and then to build a bit of texture. Bottled without fining and just a light filter.

It’s a wine that walks its own path - plenty of flavour, plenty of energy, and just the right amount of grip.

The Wine Front 94 Points

This wine has sailed through the travails of the 2024 vintage without a care. Intensity, texture and length are all on song here. White pepper, brine, apple, anise and blackcurrant bud characters mingle with tonic, woodsmoke, bacon and citrus. There’s a generosity to the palate and a bit of razzle-dazzle to the finish.  We’re in excellent territory again here.

Somewhere between sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Very interesting citrus notes with buttery texture. Perfect with seafood. Very refreshing.

Sssh don’t tell anyone how good this is

I like this after a year or 2, good luck getting it at that point though….an amazing drop from one of the most exciting wine makers in WA.

A certified organic and biodynamic site at the northern end of the cape. The vineyard is mostly unkept, unpruned and lacks traditional trellising. The vines sprawl everywhere where pigs, geese, guineafowl and cows roam free. The site faces north with a little creek running through the middle of the vineyard. Native flowers and plants grow under the rows with no herbicides or pesticides sprayed and no cultivation. It is one of only a few certified biodynamic vineyards in the region and was one of the first to receive Demeter certification.

The fruit was hand picked and showed varied levels of ripeness through the vineyard and crop, chilled overnight and hand sorted prior to being lightly cold pressed as whole bunches, very gently over a few hours. The juice was left to naturally settle prior to a wild fermention. No malolactic fermentation and fortnightly lees stirring prior to being bottled with no fining and a light filtration.

Tastes like: pink grapefruit, coconut, passionfruit, passiona, pavlova and lime.

L.A.S. Vino

Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine.

The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine-producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.

Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. The Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs are stellar, as is the Cabernet but the likes of Touriga Nacional and Sousao all find a home amongst his eye-catching range.

There's some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases and recently named the Dark Horse of the Year at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Nic is one of the most creative and boundary-pushing winemakers in the country, without question. His Margaret River range is truly unlike anything else you will find in Australia.
