Description

This is Nic Peterkin’s fourth crack at fruit from this certified organic site in Metricup, and by now he knows exactly how to let it shine. It’s Gin Gin clone again, off 24-year-old vines grown on sandy loam over clay. Compared to Wildberry Springs, it’s a different beast - more inland, a touch warmer by day, but those cooling ocean breezes still roll in like clockwork.

Everything was done by hand, of course. Picked, sorted, whole-bunch pressed, then straight into barrel for ferment. Full malo, regular lees stirring, ten months in oak (just a couple of new ones in the mix), and bottled without any funny business - just a light filter.

It’s got a bit more weight and softness than its Wildberry sibling, but still feels fresh and balanced. There’s richness here, sure, but it’s never heavy - more of a slow burn. One of those wines you sip, nod quietly, then realise half the bottle’s gone.

A warmer vintage, and while a richer, bolder wine as a result, there’s plenty of detail, too. More stone fruit in the yellow and white nectarine spectrum, luscious creamed honey, grilled nuts, ginger spice and a succulence throughout. There’s a generosity here and the palate builds, yet neat acidity keeps this reined in. As always, delicious; great on its own and even better with food.

    Something different

Seriously good Chardonnay that has made a stylistic break from traditional Chardonnays of the region. Medium bodied with complex flavours that command attention.

VINEYARD

The forth time making wine from this incredible, certified organic vineyard in the heart of Metricup, Margaret River. Twenty four year old 'gin-gin' chardonnay grown in a sandy loam topsoil over a mottled clay subsoil. (In contrast to Willyabrup's dominant forest loam soils with mottled granite).

WINERY

The fruit hand picked, chilled, hand selected and then whole bunch pressed prior to fermentation in ten barriques, two of which were new. The wine undergoes a full malolactic fermentation with fortnightly lees stirring prior to maturation for 10 months in barrique prior to blending. The wine is bottled un-fined with a light filtration

WINE

A complete contrast to the 'Wildberry Springs' chardonnay due to ; sub-region, soil, climate, and fermentation vessel. The allure of creating a new very different chardonnay was too hard to pass up. A wine made with certified organic fruit and treated in the winery 'organically'.

In Margaret River the days are warm due to where the vineyard sits in lattitude and the nights are cool due to the pure afternoon breezes flowing off the Indian ocean. This impacts the wine. It has warmth, weight, richness and flavour but also an incredible freshness with flavours of citrus, lemon, lime, curd, peach and stonefruit.

L.A.S. Vino

Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine.

The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine-producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.

Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. The Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs are stellar, as is the Cabernet but the likes of Touriga Nacional and Sousao all find a home amongst his eye-catching range.

There's some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases and recently named the Dark Horse of the Year at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Nic is one of the most creative and boundary-pushing winemakers in the country, without question. His Margaret River range is truly unlike anything else you will find in Australia.
