Description

This one’s not your usual anything. Sort of a white wine, sort of a rose, and drinks like a lightly textural Chardonnay. It’s 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay from a tiny, old vineyard down in Wilyabrup - one of the last sites in the region still growing Pinot. Planted back in 1980, this one-hectare block hugs the Willyabrup Brook and cops plenty of that coastal breeze off the Indian Ocean.

Nic treats the fruit gently - hand picked, whole-bunch pressed, and then fermented naturally in a mix of barriques and clay amphora. Everything’s kept separate until the final blend, with regular lees stirring throughout to build texture. No fining, just a light filter before bottling.

It’s kind of strawberries-and-cream meets sea spray and stone fruit, but that undersells how smart and drinkable it actually is. One of the country's premier Roses.

Pure copper colour, well-flavoured, has some body and a softness but also feels crunchy, or at least snappy, particularly through the finish. Cherry, strawberry, twiggy spice, red dirt and orange oil, with hints of salted, sea rosemary about the edges. Lovely wine. Wine-y. Follows through appreciably on the finish, with savouriness in the ascendancy.

Albino PNO is one of those rosés that’s lovely on its own but much better with food, as it’s super textural. A pale coppery hue. Enticing thanks to the aromas and flavours – all florals, beeswax and freeze-dried raspberries. The palate unfurls with spiced poached cherries, clotted cream and pear-skin phenolics adding texture.

    A cracking drop!

Hesitant to leave such a good review as securing these bottles is hard, but what a delicious wine! It’s everything they say it is, and perfect for enjoying in the afternoon sun. Think elegance in a glass, as a delicious take on a rose.

The L.A.S. Vino Albino PNO is made from pinot noir & chardonnay grapes grown in forest grove soils over granitic rock. The vineyard sits on the banks of the willyabrup river, only kilometres from the Indian ocean where cool ocean breezes flow up the valley. It’s one of the oldest and last remaining vineyards in Margaret River that contains Pinot Noir. A small one hectare vineyard with high density plantings and two different clones planted in 1980.

Hand picked fruit, whole bunch pressed and naturally fermented in barrique. In comparison with other years the wine is lighter in colour and lower in alcohol, yet has body and balance through a secondary ferment, regular lees stirring and the addition of Chardonnay (20%). You can think of it as a rose if you like, but its a lot more than that. Lifted aromas of strawberries, rockmelon and cream.

L.A.S. Vino

Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine.

The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine-producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.

Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. The Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs are stellar, as is the Cabernet but the likes of Touriga Nacional and Sousao all find a home amongst his eye-catching range.

There's some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases and recently named the Dark Horse of the Year at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Nic is one of the most creative and boundary-pushing winemakers in the country, without question. His Margaret River range is truly unlike anything else you will find in Australia.
