Description

Joshua Cooper is making a real name for himself as one of the most exciting young winemakers in the country, and Cabernet is where his heart really lies.  We recently tasted this Balgownie Vineyard Cabernet with Josh and to be honest, it blew us away.

It comes off the original 1970 plantings at Balgownie in Bendigo, a site that’s been producing seriously good Cabernet for decades. Old vines like these don’t muck around – the fruit comes off with natural depth and balance, and Josh’s low-intervention approach lets that character shine.

The 2024 vintage delivered fruit with great concentration - probably moreso then in recent years - but also with his typical freshness, so the wine has plenty of flavour without being over the top. It’s structured and age-worthy, but still shows enough generosity to be enjoyed now if you give it a decent decant. Think dark fruits, a bit of spice, and those fine tannins that remind you why Cabernet from these old vineyards is so special.

As with all of Josh’s wines, there isn’t much to go around. This is the pick of his Cabernets – serious quality from a legendary site, made by a Cabernet-obsessed winemaker who’s going from strength to strength.

96+ points
"This is ridiculously good red wine, complex, layered, nuanced, understated and just gorgeous and delicious to drink now; with an immense future. Lay on the superlatives. One of the best young cabernets I’ve seen from Australia."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"Occasionally, a winemaker comes along who has the gift of presence and crafts compelling wines. Josh Cooper is one. Astonishing, as he’s only in his mid-30s"
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Maiden Gully, Bendigo is cited on the fantastic, classical label of this wine. The history lessons from Josh Cooper are appreciated. This wine puts me in mind of the great cabernets of Australia. It has a distinct minty, eucalyptus character but it fits with the cassis, dark cherry, white pepper, old cigar box, a curious volcanic ash note and red capsicum characters that meld around that. Distinctly minerally too, a cool, almost mineral water meets river pebble feel to this wine. Tightly wound, fine, sleek tannins lending a freshness and succulence that delivers comments like ‘outstanding tannin profile’ and similar. A medium weight and cool feeling wine, compact and energetic. This is ridiculously good red wine, complex, layered, nuanced, understated and just gorgeous and delicious to drink now; with an immense future. Lay on the superlatives. One of the best young cabernets I’ve seen from Australia, to stutter." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Deep, inky garnet. A wine which immediately makes one sit up and focus. Refined and complex with graphite, sweet cassis, cedar spice, violet and rose, air reveals infinite nuance and detail and a briny, nori like complexity. The palate is flooded with wave upon wave of dark Cabernet fruit, braced by a strict but not overbearing tannic structure and refreshing acid, finishing with sweet violet and cassis, and a wave of perfume.

The most refined of the Cabernet cuvées, but also the most concentrated and finally balanced. The best vintage yet for us from this wonderful site and vintage and a wine that displays my most prized characteristics - effortless complexity and power without weight.

Please decant well prior to drinking, or cellar for as long as you like.

Joshua Cooper

Joshua Cooper is the son of Nelly and Allan Cooper, the founders of the acclaimed Cobaw Ridge winery in the Macedon Ranges.

Born and raised on the top-tier cool climate wines of his family, Josh's wines have a delicacy and unforced feel to them. As you might imagine, growing up in the Macedon Ranges, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are two varieties he particularly excels with, as too is his great love, which is Cabernet. He sources his fruit from a series of growers across central Victoria who farm with a like-minded philosophy of organic farming and sustainability, with plans to plant his own vineyard in Macedon in the future.

Josh makes only a small amount of each wine and they are in high demand from those who want to get in early on the next generation of Cooper. He is undoubtedly one of the country's most exciting and acclaimed young winemakers, being named James Halliday's Best New Winery for 2024 as well as the winner of Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine’s Young Winemaker of the Year 2020.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
