Description

"The wines are a stunning collection of real thrill—wonderfully classic and so expressive."
- Anne Krebiehl MW (Vinous)

"Vintages like this have become rare in this century—ones in which full fruit ripeness combines with lightness, fine slate spice and lively acidity..."
- Stephan Reinhardt (The Wine Advocate)

Katharina Prüm really had the elements on her side in 2024. It was a proper, old-school cool vintage across the Mosel that required an October harvest, meaning the fruit has this effortless clarity and charm that you just can't fake. There’s no heavy, forced alcohol or blocky sweetness here, even at the Goldkapsel tier.

The blue slate walls of the Graacher Himmelreich vineyard give this beast its distinctive, punchy mineral frame. Because it’s a Goldkapsel Auslese, you’re getting a selection of the most pristine, botrytis-affected bunches, offering a deeper layer of honeyed concentration without losing an ounce of that cool-climate tension.

That classic Prüm matchstick reduction is there up front, but it yields to a stellar mix of candied citrus peel, poached white plums, and a damp, stony earthiness. The unforced grape sugars are intense but get completely sliced apart by a driving, electric line of natural acidity.

We reckon this is on par with their best releases yet, a masterclass in low-alcohol power that will live comfortably in the dark for forty years.

97 points - “The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel was made with more than half botrytis-affected fruit in the wine. Once again the savor of slate precedes any other notion. Some lichen adds flavor, while mint and tansy add overtones. The palate plunges into the suppleness of ripe, smooth peach, almost like peach ice cream. It is so creamy and serene, with the ripest note of fruit enhanced and heightened by sweetness. A gorgeous frame of orange zest gives it beautiful tanginess while adding temperance and freshness.” - Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

96 points - “This smells just like lilac blossoms in spring. Rich and compact with a firm structure, this botrytis Auslese makes a bold statement on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Quite some spices in the finish, but this is still tightly wound and you’ll need patience to get everything out of this beauty.” - Jamessuckling.com

96 points - “The 2024 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese (Gold Capsule) is very delicate on the nose that reveals seed and herbal notes intermingled with delicate slate and Riesling aromas. Textured and vibrantly fresh on the palate, this is a light and filigreed, highly refined and elegant Auslese with a saline finish and remarkable crystallinity even though the wine is also based on botrytized grapes.” - Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

Prüm has made a small amount of Goldkapsel this year. For this rare style, multiple passes and draconian selections were required to harvest fruit at precisely the right level of ripeness. There is obviously yet another, considerable step up in power and weight.

Katharina Prüm explains the Goldkapsel wines in this way: “Think of them as limited edition, small production lots of the best Auslese of a vintage. They are made from stronger, selected grapes containing more concentrated juice, usually affected by a certain amount of botrytis.” They can age considerably longer than ‘white kap’ Auslesen, lasting seemingly forever. Many decades at least. Over time, they lose some of their sweetness, gain greater elegance and harmony, and become increasingly complex.

Goldkapsel are still ultimately best served with savoury dishes: think robust, savoury food and a range of cheeses (not blue). You can throw anything at them, even very spicy dishes, red meat and the same things mentioned in the Auslese bracket above. However, you can also now begin to think about desserts, especially when the wines are young—ideally fruit-based dishes, crème caramel, that type of thing. Typically, nothing too sweet or chocolate-based. Overall, they are far more versatile than most dry whites, and certainly more so than all red wine styles.

Founded in 1911, and sporting one of the great unbroken track records for quality (save a short reprieve during World War II), J.J. Prum is one of the great wine producers of Germany, and indeed, the world.

These rare Rieslings are legendary for their incredible longevity, purity, and articulation of place. They are touted by critics as some of the finest examples of Riesling to be found anywhere on the planted. As Stephan Reinhardt once wrote, "the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand."

The Prum family has seen the estate through three generations, with current director Dr. Katharina Prum taking hold of the reins during the 2007 harvest. With Katharina's commitment to tradition and quality from her family's label, J.J. Prum is sure to remain one of the benchmarks of the Mosel for decades to come.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
