Description

The 2024 Hughes & Hughes Riesling is a brilliant showcase of Tasmania’s cool-climate Riesling, balancing vibrant fruit, textural complexity, and refreshing precision.

Crafted by Jonny Hughes, who honed his skills over seven years at Moorilla, this Riesling sources fruit from the Derwent Valley, North West Tasmania, and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

The winemaking process includes whole-bunch pressing and a small portion fermented on skins to enhance texture. Fermentation is carried out with natural yeasts in both stainless steel and seasoned barrels, halting when the ideal balance between residual sugar (7g/L) and acidity is achieved. The wine is then matured on lees and bottled unfined and filtered, further enhancing its texture!

On the palate, expect a harmonious interplay of bright citrus and stone fruit flavours, complemented by a subtle sweetness and a crisp, refreshing finish. The slight residual sugar adds body, while the natural acidity provides a laser-like purity.

This Riesling is an excellent match for seafood dishes and is perfect for enjoying on a sunny afternoon.

    Beautiful balanced Riesling. Enough sugar to be easy drinking - one of the best Rieslings I’ve tried in Australia.

Fruit from vineyards in the North West, Derwent Valley and D'Entrecasteaux Channel, picked between 11.8 and 12.5 baume. Whole bunch pressed or soaked on skins for 12 to 24 hours. Slowly fermented in stainless steel and barrels with natural yeast. Stopped when sugars and acids found balance and matured on lees. Bottled unfined and filtered.

hughes & hughes riesling has become something that we've got a very specific sort of house style for, based on those more Germanic influences where we're always playing with the balance between sugar and acidity to find something that promotes the fruit in the wine, the texture in the wine, and is really a versatile style of Riesling. So there will always be that play off between the sugar and the acid.

Mewstone

Mewstone Wines is a joint venture between Jonny and Matt Hughes, two Tasmanian born wine-heads, and their respective wives Margie and Cathie.

The two families have invested in a small plot of land on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the charmingly named locality of Flowerpot, on the south-eastern tip of Tasmania. Matt works the grapes, Jonny makes the wines, taking what he learnt from seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla and re-imagining it for his own label.

The Hughes & Hughes wines offer some of the best value to be found in Tasmania at the moment, and the Mewstone premium range focuses on exceptional single-vineyard wines made in a style that Jonny wants to drink. James Halliday called them, "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Keep an eye on this ambitious pair as their star continues to rise.
