Description

From just three-quarters of a hectare in the Tamar Valley, the Holyman Chardonnay is one of Tasmania’s hardest wines to get your hands on and one of its best. The fruit comes from a small block of vines planted in 1986, less than a kilometre from the Tamar River, where cool nights and gentle ripening build natural acidity and precision.

The grapes were pressed as whole bunches and fermented naturally in 100% new French oak puncheons. There are no additions, no shortcuts - just a small dose of sulphur at bottling to keep it sound. Joe makes this Chardonnay fruit sing, year in, year out.

The 2024 vintage was warm and dry, producing a Chardonnay with intensity and drive. It shows white peach, citrus and nougat on the nose, leading to a taut, racy palate with a long, powerful finish. The oak sits comfortably behind the fruit, adding shape rather than weight.

Only a tiny amount of this wine is made each year, and most of it never leaves Tasmania. It’s a pure, confident expression of site - one that will reward patience for at least five years in the cellar.

"An excellent release, and while it’s good now, it’ll be even better with a couple more years in bottle."

Grapefruit, white peach, lemon zest, aniseed, cinnamon and cedar oak, some vanilla and white flower perfume. It’s an intense and tightly-coiled wine, though it’s not lacking in pleasure factor even as a young wine. Bright grapefruity acidity, green olive, firm flinty and chalky texture, with a lively finish of excellent length. Mouth-watering and zesty to close. An excellent release, and while it’s good now, it’ll be even better with a couple more years in bottle.

    Great bargain

Tasted this alongside some solid Premier and Grand Cru Burgs. Holyman easily ranks equal, if not more. Great balance, structure and acidity - at 1/3 the price of the Burgs.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
