Description

The Austrian Grüner Veltliner grape is one of the current 'it' varieties amongst wine lover circles, loved for its texture, natural freshness and versatility with food.

The Adelaide Hills region is where the variety is proving most successful, a fact that can be attributed wholly and solely to the inspired work of Hahndorf Hill guru Larry Jacobs. Jacobs prophetically first planted the variety in the region in 2006, since then many Hills producers have followed suit. But the Hahndorf Hill GRU remains the gold standard of Australian Gruner.

With a lengthy history of trophies, gold medals and outstanding reviews this is a clear benchmark for the variety in Australia - if you want to see what Gruner is all about, there is simply no better example in the country.

Top 100 Wines of 2024
"Larry Jacobs and Mark Dobson are stepping away from Hahndorf Hill and into well-earned retirement, so it’s timely to acknowledge the role these two played in pioneering gruner veltliner in this country... It’s a delicious legacy to leave."

93 points - "Top 100 Wines of 2024 Larry Jacobs and Mark Dobson are stepping away from Hahndorf Hill and into well-earned retirement, so it’s timely to acknowledge the role these two played in pioneering gruner veltliner in this country. This wine validates their unwavering faith in the variety. It’s packed tight with pear skin and grapefruit, a touch of quince too, and liberally sprinkled with peppery spice. It’s a delicious legacy to leave." - Nick Ryan (The Australian)

Keep coming back

It's soft and a veers a little into sweet, but still holds up especially when paired with white fish

The cradle of Australian Gruner

An Australian reference standard , showing typical flavours including guava, embedded in a long. textural and satisfying palate . Let's hope the new owners maintain this super quality.

A Top Example of Aussie Grüner

This wine is a fantastic representation of Aussie Grüner. It's bright and lively with a nice balance of fruit sweetness and crisp acidity. It delivers a satisfying mouthfeel and dry finish.

Nice one

Delicious texture and spice

Tasting notes: At Hahndorf Hill we produce four different styles of Gruner, of which Gru is our classic style. This vintage has a perfumed nose with nectarines, lime peel, and chamomile. The palate is brimming with yellow-fleshed stone fruit and an edge of guava, all framed by a magical, juicy acidity and delicious mouth-filling texture. This wine has a long, flavoursome finish with on-going layers of texture and spice. Perfectly matched with all Asian cuisine, white meats, seafoods and vegetarian dishes. But most excitingly, here is the ultimate white wine that will match perfectly with your favourite rare sirloin steak!
Gruner Veltliner is a variety that ages well and this wine should develop splendidly for up to 8 - 10 years.

Hahndorf Hill

Hahndorf Hill Winery (HHW) is owned by Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson, who operate the boutique business together with a dedicated team.

Larry was once an intensive-care doctor who gave up medicine to become the founder of Mulderbosch Vineyards in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

His trailblazing label in the Adelaide Hills is regarded as the benchmark in Australia for Austrian varieties, this stuff is world class.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
