Description

Relationships are so important for winemakers looking to source great fruit in premium regions like the Adelaide Hills.

So here, Gareth and Rainbo lean on some friends who are real grower heavyweights in the region; sourcing fruit from Murdoch Hill, and the Turnbull family for their Shiraz.

This wine is perfectly ripe, with all the cool climate traits of pepper and perfume. This is some serious wine, showcasing the value of having the right friends.

"Like most of the Gentle Folk portfolio, this evolves over days in much the same way as a living thing, breathing in air and changing shape, opening and unfurling... On the palate, there are more floral elements, with notes of cassia, cinnamon bark and blue plum. The natural acidity keeps the wine's pulse energetic. This is a remarkable bottle for the price."

94+ points - "Like most of the Gentle Folk portfolio, this evolves over days in much the same way as a living thing, breathing in air and changing shape, opening and unfurling. The fruit is sourced from two of the very best vineyards in the Adelaide Hills: Murdoch Hill and Turnbull. Swathes of blue fruits, including blueberry and blackberry, dominate the nose in a fresh-fruited compote style, with plenty of spice to keep earth at the fore. It's very aromatic, pretty and free. On the palate, there are more floral elements, with notes of cassia, cinnamon bark and blue plum. The natural acidity keeps the wine's pulse energetic. This is a remarkable bottle for the price." - Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "This is cool, ripe, refreshing and complex. It’s a delight to drink. It’s savoury at heart but boysenberry and red-black cherry flavours keep it pulsing juicily along. Twig, nut, undergrowth and herb notes – effectively into tobacco territory – roll harmoniously through the wine, as do mint and cedar characters. This wine feels both polished and frisky, in the context of genuine, ripe, fruit flavour. It’s good." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    Excellent shiraz/syrah

Simply one of the best syrah in Australia!

“We are lucky to purchase Syrah from two of the best Hills sites—multiple clones, heaps of sun, plus some thoughtful planting density and vine age. These vines are grown by great friends, the Turnbulls and the Downers, with a passion for their land and the wine it can produce. 2024 has density, spice, tannin, and all the things you want from proper Syrah.”

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people, both originally seaweed experts, who turned their hands to farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Today they are crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills and are firmly rooted in the upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene.

Their wines cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home to yours. The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. They are beautiful people making increasingly breathtaking wines that you definitely want to check out.
