Description

Scary Gully is one of the most dramatic vineyards in the Adelaide Hills - perched high at 620 metres on steep sandstone and quartz slopes that test even the toughest growers. Planted back in 1984, it’s one of the oldest Pinot sites in the region, and every year it delivers wines that feel alive with altitude.

The 2024 vintage was mild and dry, with tiny yields and pristine fruit. The result is a beautifully composed Pinot Noir that captures everything special about this site: lifted perfume, fine structure and a long, mineral finish. There’s a core of red and dark cherry, a touch of spice, and the unmistakable forest-floor character that always marks Scary Gully.

Fermented with 20% whole clusters and aged for ten months in French oak (20% new), it’s a wine that sits right in the sweet spot between power and precision.

This is one of Gareth Belton’s most complete Scary Gully Pinots yet - bright, layered, and brimming with energy.

"There’s a lovely dark-fruited profile, with aromas of black cherries, blackberry bush, blood oranges and graphite. The palate has fine tannins and a plush mouthfeel, with a long, stony, mouthwatering finish. 25% whole-bunch fermentation, made from vines planted in the 1980s. Drink or hold."

    Stunning

Super fresh and fruity yet really great, balanced tannins and depth.

Definitely drink young and enjoy one of the better local Pinot Noirs.

The Pinot noir at Scary Gully is one of the highest and oldest in the Adelaide Hills and sits upon a ridge of sandstone and quartz. The steepness of the site, and hence "Scary", means there are often some serious farming challenges in wet years. However, the 2024 season was mild and dry, and although yields were low, the grapes were pristine, and the resulting wine is beautifully balanced, perfumed and pure, all hallmarks of a great season for the site

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people, both originally seaweed experts, who turned their hands to farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Today they are crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills and are firmly rooted in the upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene.

Their wines cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home to yours. The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. They are beautiful people making increasingly breathtaking wines that you definitely want to check out.
