Description

Gareth Belton is a serious Sangiovese lover. He thinks it's one of the best suited varieties for the Adelaide Hills. And this, his best expression of the grape, from the Turnbull Vineyard in Charleston might be one of his most compelling releases yet.

The fruit comes from the highest, rockiest part of the site, where 27-year-old vines grow in sandy loam and sandstone soils. It’s a tough environment that delivers intensity, structure and a natural sense of tension in the wine. The 2024 release follows on from last year’s debut, this time with a little more flesh and generosity while still holding that beautiful lift and drive that defines Gentle Folk’s reds.

Fermented with 100% destemmed fruit and aged in a mix of terracotta amphora and French oak, it’s a Sangiovese full of character and texture - bright red cherry, blood orange and spice layered over fine, chalky tannins. There’s focus, length and a savoury edge that makes it a brilliant table wine now, with the bones to age gracefully too.

Whole-hearted focus here. This is sangiovese in its purest form. Harmony, yes, but the detail here is otherworldly. Fine threads of bright cherry, orange rind, cranberry, pomegranate, the fruit inlaid with spice (nutmeg, clove). A portion of the wine is aged in terracotta, and the gentle, controlled natural micro-oxygenation of the vessel gives it a texture akin to raw silk. The tannins are precise and feathered through the body of the wine, chalky but resolute. It is remarkably beautiful and masterfully made, to enjoy today or over the next decade.

This is so pure and focused, with bright, lifted aromas of red fruit, ferrous earth, crushed stones, citrus peel, fresh herbs and spices. The palate is textural and refined, with long, silky tannins that coat the mouth and lead to a mouthwatering finish. Grown at 460 meters, this spends four months on the skins, with only the free-run juice aged in terra cotta before blending into oak prior to bottling. A great sangiovese with remarkable complexity and purity. Drink or hold.

The Wine Front 94 Points

Cherry, raspberry, spice, mint, some tobacco, dried herbs and flowers. It’s medium-bodied, a little bit of sap and ripe tomato in the mix, squishy red fruit and cherry, quite nutty too, but what I like most about it is the quality of tannin; it has proper grip and texture, and they carry nicely on a long and lively finish, some orange peel bite in the aftertaste. The tannin gets me just over the line for 94 points.

    Incredible wine, highly recommend

It’s so great to be able to work with grapes that are as loved and meticulously farmed as these twenty-seven year old vines from the boniest and highest section of the Turnbull Family Vineyard in Charleston. This is the second rendition of this wine and its a ripper. Some more meatiness and red fruit than the cool and late 2023 vintage, but still showing plenty of delicate aromatics, spiciness and tannins. Its such a great variety for the region and we hope to see more of it going into the ground and mouths in the future.

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people, both originally seaweed experts, who turned their hands to farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Today they are crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills and are firmly rooted in the upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene.

Their wines cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home to yours. The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. They are beautiful people making increasingly breathtaking wines that you definitely want to check out.
