Description

Great vineyards viewed through the lens of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; that's Barney Flanders' vision for his Garagiste wines.

The Tuerong Chardonnay is an excellent example of the quality of wines he produces. There's a power and intensity to this Chardonnay, a lightning strike of acidity, a curl of luscious oak; all the while, the purity of the fruit and the characters of the vineyard remain the key point of focus.

An impressive release from Barney: it's a stunning Chardonnay comparable with the very best of the region.

"More stone fruit than citrus and a slightly richer palate compared with its Merricks sibling. Still, reined in by fine acidity and restraint in the winemaking. It’s a tip-top Tuerong with some dried fig and white peach, creamy, nutty lees and the merest hint of spicy oak. It feels luscious yet there's nothing overt or overpowering. It’s all classy chardonnay."

93 points - "Funny thing to say, but this has something of a white strawberry smell, citrus, a little struck match, sea spray and dough, some white flower perfume too. It’s saline with a little kombucha tang, lemon zest, fine powdery grip, and a sports a lively finish of fine length. Savoury and complex. A distinctive style here. A bit edgy, though lovers of salty whites will find much to enjoy here." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Garagiste Wines

Garagiste is the project of Barnaby Flanders, one of the most respected names in Mornington Peninsula wine. Since launching in 2006, Flanders has focused on making serious, small-batch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflect the distinct sub-regions of the Peninsula.

He started out at Merricks Grove in 2000 and still sources from that vineyard today, alongside parcels from places like Tuerong, Balnarring and Main Ridge. Each site brings something different - whether it’s the sandy soils of the north or the higher, cooler slopes in the south - and Flanders leans into those differences rather than smoothing them out.

His approach is minimal but exacting. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts, and sees restrained oak. Pinot Noir is all about balance - picked for freshness, made with a light touch, and bottled without excess. The wines are clean, detailed, and built to age, but they’re also approachable from the outset.

Together with winemaker and business partner Cam Marshall, Flanders also makes the Le Stagiaire range - a more accessible price point that offers legitimately some of the best value Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia that still carries the same regional clarity and intent. Across both labels, the focus is sharp: site expression, thoughtful farming, and no shortcuts. Garagiste remains one of the benchmark producers in Mornington. If you want to understand what makes this region special, this is a very good place to start.
