Description

Terre Maritime is Barney Flanders’ white wine crown jewel – the Chardonnay that sits at the very top of the Garagiste tree. It comes from a tiny corner of Merricks Grove, just a few rows of 28-year-old vines rooted in cool grey loam and crumbly red clay. Facing slightly east at 90 metres above sea level, the site is more sheltered and less vigorous than the rest of the vineyard, which means smaller bunches, lower yields, and fruit of striking concentration.

Barney keeps the winemaking simple: whole-bunch press, wild ferment in a single 500-litre puncheon, then nine months on gross lees. Nothing to hide behind, just a pure translation of vineyard and season.

The 2024 vintage was cool and low-yielding, and the Terre Maritime reflects it with razor-sharp clarity. It’s salty, chalky and racy – like licking a clean rock by the sea – but with layers of white stone fruit, citrus zest, and a flicker of anise. There’s flint and tension up front, then a long, glowing finish that shows why this wine is so revered.

Production is microscopic, and it will disappear quickly.

"Again, tops the charts as the finest chardonnay on the peninsula. The benchmark."
Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "Everything in a chardonnay that I fall for is on full display with Terre Maritime. It’s flinty, citrusy, with dabs of white stone fruit and ginger spice. Beautiful texture, glistening, a real purity within. It’s complex, detailed yet so refined, compelling all the way through to the last drop. Again, tops the charts as the finest chardonnay on the peninsula. The benchmark." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Lemon oil, flint and struck match, quite the salty sea dog here with sea spray and samphire, Japanese ginger, pink grapefruit and nectarine. A few too many things listed there, for sure, though, hey, it’s complex! It’s a tight wine, saline and savoury, a lemon curd richness in with grapefruit, aniseed is something I forgot to mention, and the finish has a bit of 9V battery on the tongue sort of energy. It has chalky bits and lots of personality. It tastes like a wine from somewhere, which is always a good thing in my book. Very nice." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

A lovely wine

Beautiful texture, everything you look for in a chardonnay.

The Terre Maritime is drawn from several rows of Chardonnay in the top corner of Merricks Grove. Barney Flanders has always felt this parcel results in a superb and unique Chardonnay. Here, the 28-year-old vines are rooted in cool grey loam with pockets of crumbly red clay. The plot sits at 90 metres and faces slightly east, offering the vines a cooler, more sheltered aspect. There’s less vigour here than in the rest of the vineyard and the bunches are a touch smaller. As a result, the fruit from this parcel makes the intense yet finessed wines we associate with Garagiste Chardonnay.

After rigorous sorting, the fruit was whole-bunch pressed into 500- litre puncheons where it wild-fermented before resting on gross lees for nine months. The cool ’24 vintage has left its mark. The wine is salt-licked and clean, living up to its namesake. It opens with zaps of acidity and a lightning-strike of flint followed by a budding glow from white stone fruit and anise spice. It’s a gorgeous, don’t miss Mornington Chardonnay that will reward patient and impatient drinkers alike.

Garagiste Wines

Garagiste is the project of Barnaby Flanders, one of the most respected names in Mornington Peninsula wine. Since launching in 2006, Flanders has focused on making serious, small-batch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflect the distinct sub-regions of the Peninsula.

He started out at Merricks Grove in 2000 and still sources from that vineyard today, alongside parcels from places like Tuerong, Balnarring and Main Ridge. Each site brings something different - whether it’s the sandy soils of the north or the higher, cooler slopes in the south - and Flanders leans into those differences rather than smoothing them out.

His approach is minimal but exacting. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts, and sees restrained oak. Pinot Noir is all about balance - picked for freshness, made with a light touch, and bottled without excess. The wines are clean, detailed, and built to age, but they’re also approachable from the outset.

Together with winemaker and business partner Cam Marshall, Flanders also makes the Le Stagiaire range - a more accessible price point that offers legitimately some of the best value Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia that still carries the same regional clarity and intent. Across both labels, the focus is sharp: site expression, thoughtful farming, and no shortcuts. Garagiste remains one of the benchmark producers in Mornington. If you want to understand what makes this region special, this is a very good place to start.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
