Description

Barney Flanders has hit another level with this 2024 Merricks Pinot Noir. It’s his 20th vintage working this site, and the experience shows in every finely tuned detail - this is pure Mornington Peninsula Pinot with muscle, poise and confidence.

Drawn from 28-year-old vines grown on the famous Mornington red dirt, this is the most structured and powerful Pinot in the Garagiste range. The 2024 vintage brought slightly higher yields than 2023, but the fruit came in balanced and pristine. Barney stuck to his trademark style: 33% whole bunches, wild ferment, gentle extraction, and 10 months in French oak (just 20% new). Very classic winemaking from Barney - if it ain't broke, don't mess with it!

The wine has incredible depth - dark cherry, raspberry, and blood plum lead into layers of spice, fresh herbs, and a subtle mineral line. The tannins are finely woven and gently assertive, giving the wine structure without heaviness. There’s lift, length and that signature savoury edge Barney handles so well.

It’s a wine that manages to be both generous and grounded. One of the Peninsula’s great Pinot makers in full stride - this is as good as Merricks gets. Drink now with air or tuck it away for a few years if you’ve got the patience.

"A distinctive trait of the Garagiste pinots, they are savoury. Sure there’s a core of good fruit, but the cherry accent is merely one component; there’s the spice, the woodsy, cedary oak, all integrated, the ferrous character, almost stony, the pleasantly drying tannins and flourish of fine acidity to close. It’s complete. It’s also charmingly aromatic."

"This is a rich, spicy and cherry laden wine. There’s some orange peel and amaro twang, an earthy spice. a bit of empty chocolate box, a cool mineral thing happening, a dusty and graphite grip to tannin, juicy dark cherry and grainy tannin on a finish of excellent length. Crisp, flavoursome and energetic. Sappy and wheaty. Very good Pinot here."

    Thoroughly enjoyable

Great tasting Mornington Pinot with a little more heft. Great balance and length.

The Pinot vines at Merricks are 28 years old and sit on grey loams and red ferrosols, but with a north-facing aspect. Yields were slightly higher than in 2023, and the fruit’s integrity meant it retained balance with Barney’s preferred inclusion of 33% bunches. The winemaking is, as always, pretty hands-off: natural fermentation as bunches and whole berries, with gentle extraction and 10 months in 20% new oak.

Barney’s touch with whole bunches is notable and, as usual, it’s seamlessly integrated, providing savoury balance to the trademark power and intensity of the Merricks fruit. It’s very deep and layered, full of berries, spice, flowers and licks of minerality. This is serious (and seriously brilliant) Pinot, combining grippy structure with fresh lift, gliding weight and lingering length. This will get even better with air and—why not?—roast duck.

Garagiste Wines

Garagiste is the project of Barnaby Flanders, one of the most respected names in Mornington Peninsula wine. Since launching in 2006, Flanders has focused on making serious, small-batch Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that reflect the distinct sub-regions of the Peninsula.

He started out at Merricks Grove in 2000 and still sources from that vineyard today, alongside parcels from places like Tuerong, Balnarring and Main Ridge. Each site brings something different - whether it’s the sandy soils of the north or the higher, cooler slopes in the south - and Flanders leans into those differences rather than smoothing them out.

His approach is minimal but exacting. Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, fermented with wild yeasts, and sees restrained oak. Pinot Noir is all about balance - picked for freshness, made with a light touch, and bottled without excess. The wines are clean, detailed, and built to age, but they’re also approachable from the outset.

Together with winemaker and business partner Cam Marshall, Flanders also makes the Le Stagiaire range - a more accessible price point that offers legitimately some of the best value Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia that still carries the same regional clarity and intent. Across both labels, the focus is sharp: site expression, thoughtful farming, and no shortcuts. Garagiste remains one of the benchmark producers in Mornington. If you want to understand what makes this region special, this is a very good place to start.
