Description

Elanto is one of the most exciting new vineyard projects in the country, and the 2024 Pinot Noir shows exactly why it’s already being talked about as a future icon. Planted in 2019 to ultra-close density (11,111 vines per hectare) by former Kooyong winemaker Sandro Mosele, the ambition here is staggering – and the results, even at this young age, are remarkable.

The vineyard’s five blocks - Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside and Basalt - were picked and fermented separately before blending. A gentle approach in the winery let the high-density fruit do the talking: whole-berry ferments, extended time on skins, and élevage in French oak for 11 months.

The result is a Pinot that feels both finely etched and quietly powerful. Aromas of red cherry, cranberry and rosehip are lifted and pure, while the palate is driven by savoury detail - blood plum, spice, a lick of mineral grip - framed by fine, chalky tannins. There’s energy and finesse, but also a depth that hints at just how serious this site will become as the vines mature.

Named Best New Winery in the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion, Elanto has already established itself as a benchmark for ambition and quality in Australian Pinot. This release is a thrilling marker of what’s to come.

"What a beguiling wine – only the second release and showing complexity far beyond its years... This has depth, some grip, a little amaro bitterness on the finish and, of utmost importance, it will age but it’s oh-so pleasing to drink today."

The 2024 Balnarring Pinot Noir is perfumed and fragrant and quite different in character compared to the 2023 tasted alongside. Where the former was powerful, structural and condensed, this is floral, perfumed and fresh. I love the way this wine performs. There is levity here and minerality too. The tannins are structural and chalky through the long finish. This is very good. It doesn't break stride at any point.

What a beguiling wine – only the second release and showing complexity far beyond its years. It’s certainly youthful and pretty with heady aromas of florals and autumn leaves with flavours of wild strawberries, dark cherries and pips, chinotto, Middle Eastern spices and some poached rhubarb, too. The medium-bodied palate is evenly poised, laden with filigree tannins (lots of them) and energising acidity; oak (25% new) completely integrated. This has depth, some grip, a little amaro bitterness on the finish and, of utmost importance, it will age but it’s oh-so pleasing to drink today.

This wine is a blend of the 5 Pinot Noir vineyards (lieux-dits); Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside and Basalt.

Each vineyard was picked and vinified separately. The fruit was first chilled and then sorted and destemmed, with a smattering of perfectly ripe whole bunches making it into the ferment, which is took place in concrete tanks. A cold soak preceded natural fermentation, which was completed in vat, before pressing, after extended time on skins.

The high-density plantings have blessed the grapes with an abundance of skin tannin which allowed for more restraint in the winery, with less time on skins required than in 2023. A consequence of this reduced extraction is an aromatic cavalcade of perfumed red fruits, and a supremely balanced wine that is framed by fine-boned, chalky tannin.

Following fermentation, the wines were raised in a mix of new and older French oak barriques. Malolactic conversion completed late spring and the wine spent a total of 11 months in barrel before bottling. Diam 30 closure.

This gorgeous 2024 Pinot is another step towards Elanto's greater goal - an Australian evocation of the structured, savoury expressions of classic Pinot Noir.
