Description

Peter Dredge is at it again, crafting a lightning bolt of a Pinot Noir that perfectly captures the tension, purity, and complexity of Tasmania’s fruit. Dredge says it's the densest and most complex Tasmanian Pinot he's made under the Dr. Edge banner in its 10-year history... Sign us up!

The 2024 Dr. Edge Tasmania Pinot Noir is a blend of Derwent Valley (60%) and Tamar Valley (40%) fruit, stitched together from 13 different parcels, each treated separately by clone, vineyard, and varying levels of whole-bunch fermentation.

Wild-fermented using the Pied de Cuve method, the wine was pressed into a mix of seasoned oak casks and Italian concrete tanks, where it rested for 9 months before bottling unfined. This vintage leans into density and depth, with the concrete element adding minerality and brightness, while the oak-matured parcels bring softness and mealy texture.

This Pinot hums with energy. Aromatically, it’s crushed red berries, wild herbs, and spice, with a faint earthy edge keeping things grounded. The palate is bright yet structured, layering red cherry, cranberry, and fine, silken tannins over a long, flowing finish.

This is Dr. Edge at full throttle - an electric Tasmanian Pinot Noir that won’t last long on the shelves. Don’t hesitate.

"This is so finespun with excellent balance, complexity and interest. A remarkable feat for a one year old wine, and a sign of age-worthiness for sure"

Forest berries and forest floor lead a restrained and poised aromatic profile, followed by dark cherry, nutmeg, and gentle earth. Air reveals more perfumed wild raspberry and blueberry fruit along with some cherry pit minerality adding lift and shape. So far, this wine belies it’s youth on account of such lovely savoury complexity and calm restrained fruit. The palate is svelte and equally lifted with the fruit more at the fore in the form of raspberry, mulberry and macerated strawberry, but it’s similarly integrated within a foil of brown spice and earth. The tannins are firm but ductile and fine working with earthy acidity to draw very good length through a poised finish. This is so finespun with excellent balance, complexity and interest. A remarkable feat for a one year old wine, and a sign of age-worthiness for sure. Drink from 2025-2034. Tasted Mar 2025.

Peter Dredge is the very model of the modern major winemaker. Classically trained, technically strong, he has the solid foundations required to push things, as he punningly promises on the label, to the edge. Without the disciplined fruit sourcing, the commitment to keeping multiple parcels separate through fermentation and the finely tuned skill to blend them in such a way it seems they just naturally coalesced, a wine of this kind of wild beauty could go very wrong. In the good doctor’s hands, they never do.

Cherry, raspberry, nice and aromatic, with a dried flower perfume, plus a little sap and spice, and an undercurrent of something a bit earthy or clay-like. It’s medium-bodied, again the violet and rose perfume amongst juicy cherry and blue fruit, toasted hazelnuts, a light dusty grain and grip to tannin, cranberry acidity, a little blood orange tang, with a bright finish of excellent length. Delightful wine. Lovely energy and sense of purity here.

    Stylish Pinot Noir

Quite Burgundian in style - light to medium bodied and has a bit of structure, but with some lovely Tasmanian fruit. Oh, and made by a top shelf winemaker with plenty of runs on the board.

    Well worth the price

I found the wine superb, even in its youth. I'd spend the money again.

Dr Edge Tasmania Pinot Noir is a blend of Derwent Valley (60%) & Tamar Valley (40%) fruit. Its the Dr's secret recipe across 13 different batches separated by clone, vineyard and varied wholebunch inclusion blended to the house style. Natural yeast (Pied de Cuve method) ferments the grapes which are pressed to old oak casks and concrete tanks to lay low for 9 months before bottling without the use of fining agents.

Dr. Edge

Peter Dredge is Dr. Edge. He is one of the most intuitive and talented winemakers on the Apple Isle.

With a wealth of experience garnered at wineries such as Bay of Fires, he has revitalised the Meadowbank label and returned it to its place as one of the must-watch vineyards in Tasmania.

Dr. Edge is his passion project where he can take risks and make Pinot Noir, Chardonnay & Riesling that truly excites him. His creativity can fly under the Dr. Edge banner and wines that walk a fine line of tension, funk and freshness invariably arise.

Only small batches of wine is produced, all made by hand, and typically they sell out in short order. Playful, pleasurable and remarkably thoughtful, the Dr. Edge creations are riveting things to drink and have rightfully earned cult status among collectors of Tasmania's finest.
