Description

One of the most crystaline and iniosyncratic Chardonnays on the Apple Isle from the one and only Peter Dredge. The 2024 Dr. Edge Tasmania Chardonnay is a snapshot of the vintage, pulling together fruit from across the state to create something that feels elegant, tense and delicious.

The fruit is a 60/40 blend of Derwent Valley and Tamar Valley, hand-picked and direct-pressed into a mix of 1,000L clay amphora and seasoned oak casks. Around 10% of the volume ferments and matures as whole Chardonnay clusters, adding grip and structure without overwhelming the wine with oak influence. It spends 9 months on lees, bottled unfined for a raw, unfiltered expression of Tasmanian Chardonnay.

Taut and savoury, this isn’t your butter-laden, fruit-forward style. Expect struck match, citrus pith, and green almond, layered with grapefruit zest, flinty minerality, and a faint saline edge. There’s power here, but it’s restrained—acid-driven, textural, and built for those who like their Chardonnay with a bit of tension.

Like all Dr. Edge wines, this will disappear fast. If you love serious, detailed Tasmanian Chardonnay, don’t wait too long.

"Such a harmonious wine with a brilliant composition... What a ripper!"

A blend of chardonnay from the Derwent and Tamar Valleys; hand-picked, direct press to 50/50 French oak barrique/clay amphora, wild ferment, nine months on lees. Gorgeous grapefruit and lemon lead, followed by hints of white peach, gentle spice, crushed stone, clotted cream, clover blossom, meal and lemon curd. Such a harmonious wine with a brilliant composition, dreamy fruit profile, a decent lick of umami and that wonderful stony Tasmanian acidity. What a ripper!

The Real Review 95 Points

Medium lemon yellow, some lime glints in the light. Lime curd, oyster brine and sourdough starter aromatics. Primary and fresh with fine detailed apple and lime fruit, saline undertones, all bound by fine boned acidity and a supple phenolic grip. Great length, finishing with density and detail that demands a return. Not a blockbuster but no less appealing for its subtlety.

Savoury style here, and it’s pretty much all about the texture. Green pear, oatmeal, white mushroom, lemon with honey, almond, chamomile and green olives in brine. It’s chalky and gently chewy, a lively bite to green apple acidity, tangerine juiciness, but also has some nutty richness, plenty of zip and energy, with an umami-laced finish of excellent length and grip. Distinctive. Excellent wine. Yum.

Lifted and fresh aromas of talc, lemon pith, grapefruit, bath salts and apple blossom sit high and pretty before an emergent salty brine note adds depth and dimension beneath. Some faint nectarine skin with air. The balance of bright pithy, tensile fruit and saline complexity is very moreish. The palate is equally fresh, pithy and tensile with a lifted feel – white grapefruit pith, lemon peel, talc, white nectarine, saline minerality, white flowers. It all bursts through the mouth before being funnelled through chiselled pithy phenolics and zesty, citrus-laden acidity which draws long length through the finish. There’s so much energy and tension here, with architectural structure capping it all off. An exciting release. Drink from 2025-2035. Tasted Mar 2025.

    Tassie nectar

Not surprisingly, Dr Edge (aka Peter Dredge) has produced a glorious multi-region Tassie Chardonnay. White peach, almond and a little green apple on the palate - yum!

    Decent Drop

3.8 Pretty good drop, prefer the classic tassie chardonnay's. A little too sharp and acidic for my taste

    worth the a try!

this wine has a lot of hype and it does stand up to it imo!

encapsulating the vintage by using the best grapes they could get, this white has a brilliant mouth feel with good body and a nice touch of oak with predominant stone fruit flavours - Chablis esq with a touch more oak.

    nice stuff, worth trying.

Dr Edge Tasmania Chardonnay is a blend of Derwent Valley (60%) & Tamar Valley (40%) fruit. The fresh, hand picked fruit is direct pressed to 1,000L clay amphora and some seasoned oak casks for natural (wild) fermentation and time on lees for 9 months. The clay vessels hold around 10% by volume whole Chardonnay fruit clusters for fermentation and maturation, offering grip and texture without tasting like a forest in France. Bottled without fining agents.
