Description

The Champs des Cerises is drawn from the Cordell family vineyard in Macclesfield, right down in the cool, far southeast corner of the Upper Yarra Valley. It’s all MV6 clone Pinot grown on red volcanic soils, a site that gives naturally small, concentrated berries and plenty of lift. This is the vineyard Shaun Crinion turns to each year for his best Pinot fruit.

The fruit was hand-picked and chilled overnight before a five-day cold soak. About 30% whole bunches were included, with the rest kept as whole berries. Fermentation kicked off naturally and the cap was worked gently by hand over three weeks. The wine went straight to French oak, only 10% new, and stayed there on lees for ten months before a short rest in stainless and bottling without fining or filtration.

In the glass, it’s bright and clear with aromas of black cherry, cranberry and a hint of spice. There’s a little cola root and forest floor as it opens up, showing more depth with air. The palate has a clean, red-fruited core and just enough tannin to give shape without hard edges.

It’s a detailed, composed Pinot that shows exactly why Dappled has become one of the most trusted names in the Yarra. Only small quantities were made, and Shaun thinks it's likely the most cellar-worthy release since the 2022.

96+ points
"Shaun Crinion has a knack for making wines that are subtle and complex, and this ticks both those boxes... Gently chewy and persistent tannins round out a wine that will provide considerable enjoyment now and over the next six to eight years at least."

96+ points - "From a vineyard located in Macclesfield in the cool Upper Yarra; 30% whole bunches, A medium, bright ruby garnet. Shaun Crinion has a knack for making wines that are subtle and complex, and this ticks both those boxes. Aromas of perfectly ripened raspberry, rose bush and spice lead onto the palate, which has lovely mouthfeel and intensity but remains light on its feet at the same time. Gently chewy and persistent tannins round out a wine that will provide considerable enjoyment now and over the next six to eight years at least." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Loved it.

Had this pinot a few times now, good value for money and a little different to others from the yarra Valley.

Vineyard

The Cordell family vineyard, located in Macclesfield in the cool far southeast corner of the Upper Yarra Valley. All MV6 clone Pinot on predominately red soils.

Winemaking

The fruit is hand-picked, sorted and chilled overnight to 12 degrees to enable a 5-day cold soak to occur. The fruit is gently destemmed (70% whole berry) and 30% whole bunch is included… It’s then left to commence spontaneous fermentation with the natural vineyard yeasts. The ferment is lightly pigéaged (foot stomped) and hand plunged daily, spending about 3 weeks on skins. The finished wine is pressed straight to French puncheons and barriques (10% new), undergoing natural MLF in its own time and kept on lees until bottling. The wine is in oak for 10 months with further aging in stainless before being bottled via gravity. Unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

This Pinot is deep ruby red with brilliant clarity and aromas of black cherry, cranberries, cola root, and spice. With time, more undergrowth and savage characters come to the fore. The palate has a core of red fruits and gentle oak spices that lead to a structured and generous finish that I haven’t seen in the wine since the 22’ vintage. This will age very well.

Dappled Wines

Dappled owner/winemaker Shaun Crinion has a mountain of winemaking experience from around the globe, culminating with the establishment of a label all of his own.

Shaun's focus is on expressing the sub-regionality of the Yarra Valley through simply gorgeous Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and a growing range of experimental wines.

With the combination of Shaun's A-grade fruit from the Yarra's top growers and his precise, astute winemaking, the value on offer in the Dappled range is second to none.

He was James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2018. The wines have only stepped in quality since then though the modest pricing remains the same. Unsurprisingly, his wines sell out in short order each year. He's now regarded as one of the best small-scale producers in the modern Yarra Valley.
