Description

This wine pays tribute to Elvie Clarke, mother of Kevin John Cullen and a much-loved figure in the family’s history. It’s also a snapshot of the Mangan vineyard, which Cullen Wines have managed since 2016 and farmed biodynamically since day dot. The blend is a mix of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and a splash of Verdelho, all picked by hand across a few days in early Feb, in line with the biodynamic calendar.

No oak, no additions, no heavy lifting in the winery – just a natural ferment, left to its own rhythm. What you get is a clean, textural white with plenty of freshness, a bit of grip, and that hallmark Cullen that Vanya's BDX white blends are well reputed for.

A wine that’s all about clarity and confidence – easy to enjoy now, but not short on character.

"It’s a delightful drink. Nothing overt or harsh; there’s texture, talc-like acidity, refreshment aplenty and a lovely energy within."

Previously the Mangan Vineyard bottling, this is now named Elvie Clarke, after the winemaker’s grandmother. Aromas of lemon peel, lime leaves, apple blossoms and sliced pears. The midweight palate is textural and mineral with a structured, refined finish. Sauvignon blanc, semillon and verdelho. Delicious. Screw cap. Drink now.

This wine naming honours Elvie Clarke, mother of Kevin John and daughter of Ephraim and Louisa Clarke. Elvie Alice Clarke was a gifted pianist and enchanting story teller. Elvie’s musical career was cut short by the first World War.

The wine is a blend of 58% sauvignon blanc, 35% Semillon and 7 % Verdelho. The vines were planted in 1995-1997 and are certified biodynamic since 2008 and owned by Cullen
Wines since 2016. The fruit was hand harvested around the biodynamic calendar of fruit and flower days, the wine was naturally fermented without additions of acid malolactic culture and fermentation yeast allowing the lands voice to sing loudly in the glass.

Cullen

The Cullen property has been in the Cullen family since 1948 with founders Diana Madeline and Kevin John planting the first vines on the farm in 1971.

Today Cullen sits as one of the top estates in Margaret River. Their impeccable versions of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are now both considered clear regional benchmarks.

The Cullen estate is farmed with a strict adherence to the principals of biodynamic farming. Current day owner and winemaker Vanya Cullen is one of the most outspoken advocates of the benefits of these practices in the industry and her results speak for themselves.

These are extraordinary wines that hold their own against the world's best. A gem of the Australian wine scene, to be sure.
