Description

The 2024 vintage threw absolute chaos at Vanya Cullen, breaking records as the earliest, driest and warmest harvest in Margaret River's history. Yet, it’s exactly in these extreme years that her uncompromising, long-term commitment to biodynamics pays off. The historic 1971 vines dug deep into their ancient gravel soils, pulling through with remarkable fruit concentration and an unexpected twist for a young Diana Madeline: it is remarkably approachable right now.

A rigorous selection of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot spent 14 months in French oak. This year the architecture feels slightly more open-weave than the monolithic 2023, offering early drinker appeal without sacrificing an ounce of its legendary cellaring potential.

It smells of brooding black fruits, cedar, sweet tobacco leaf and bay leaf. The mouthfeel is plush, laden with dark plum and cassis, before raw cacao-like tannins and a gravelly mineral line snap the finish tight./p>

We've long loved Diana Madeline and this is another compelling chapter in its remarkable story.

98 points
"Brilliantly structured, the texture is sleek and seductive with succulent fruit throughout. The wine is very, very long and finishes with the silkiest of tannins. A wonderful Margaret River Cabernet which will sail through the next twenty years."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

"This is very concentrated and power-packed, and begs to be left alone for several years before broaching, and will pay off big time if cellared. Hide it away to get your full money's worth. A glorious cabernet blend of outstanding potential."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

98 points - "2024 was always facing a tough task following on from the truly sensational 2023 vintage. In Margaret River however, wonderful vintages seem the norm rather than the exception. 2024 broke records as the earliest, driest and hottest vintage experienced by the region, but the team found that biodynamic practices enabled the vineyards to come through and offer yet another superb DM Cab. Harvest took place over six pickings, on Fruit and Flower days and concluded on a Moon opposite Saturn astral event. The fruit was placed in a mix of amphorae and stainless steel tanks for wild fermentation and skin contact ranged from 15 to 78 days. Maturation was for an average of fourteen months, 50% of the barrels being new oak. The oak was a combination of puncheons and biodynamic barriques. The final wine is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Cabernet Franc 3% Malbec and 2% Merlot. Near black/maroon with a dark magenta rim, the nose reveals aromas of black fruits, tobacco leaves, cloves, a touch of axle grease, chocolate, cassis, aniseed and blackberries. Brilliantly structured, the texture is sleek and seductive with succulent fruit throughout. The wine is very, very long and finishes with the silkiest of tannins. A wonderful Margaret River Cabernet which will sail through the next twenty years. Over that period, there is room for further improvement." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

97 points - "Very deep red-purple colour, with a beautifully fragrant nose of cedar, tobacco leaf, crushed mulberry and blackberry, the full-bodied and muscular palate sporting masses of tannins which are ripe and supple without astringency or bitterness. This is very concentrated and power-packed, and begs to be left alone for several years before broaching, and will pay off big time if cellared. Hide it away to get your full money's worth. A glorious cabernet blend of outstanding potential." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "Consistently one of WA’s most enjoyable red wines. Lush and comforting. Ripe black fruit, chocolate-covered liquorice, cassis, and iodine edges. It smells of Wadandi Country, quality fruit, and the sense that everything will be ok. In the mouth, the drinkability at this young age is epic. Plush and integrated. Charcoal, blood plum, raspberry coulis, gum nuts, muddled strawberries and 70% chocolate. Tannins are ripe, squeaky, like raw cacao powder. And like all the biodynamic wines from Cullen, the synergy of fruit, structure and finish works like a lifeforce, in harmony. Makes you want to romanticise sadness and listen to vinyl." - Cyndal Petty (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "A ripeness of cherry, black plum, even raspberry characters with underlying cassis, liquorice, salt bush, peppery bay leaf and a dash of toasty hazelnut. The tannins sit in ground nut territory, grippy, not dramatically so, but with authority in the deeper, darker and richer feel of the wine. A little palate staining swish of sweet fruit and sweet spice lingers, so too a dash of granite-like minerality. Perhaps not of the finesse and tension of some DM wines, but a very good look at complexity through the lens of concentration, ripeness and more supple tannin profile – and just straight up delicious, I mumbles to myself – a very good wine of the year." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "The 2024 Diana Madeline leads with punctuated cassis, bay leaf, sweet tobacco, nori, blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice. In the mouth, the wine is laden with graphite tannins and phenolic grip, and yet, as with all of the Diana Madelines, the texture has a finely milled, pulverized, fine quality to it. I judge this wine to be relatively open-weave in relation to its vintage peers at their same time on release, perhaps indicating that this will need less time in the cellar in order to come around for earlier drinking. To be clear, this is no indictment on its ability to age. This is very good, plush yet still herbal. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Diana Madeline is the culmination of more than 50 years of dedication, care, and deep respect for the land. The vines, planted in 1971 on ancient gravelly granite soils, consistently produce a wine of great quality, elegance, perfume, and balance.

The fruit was hand-harvested across six pickings, beginning in mid-February and culminating a few weeks later on a Moon opposite Saturn astral event. Skin contact ranged from 15 to 78 days, before gentle basket pressing to barrel. The wine then matured for an average of 14 months in oak, with 50% new oak, across a combination of biodynamic barriques and puncheons.

The final blend comprises 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Merlot.

VINTAGE NOTES
2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. Unseasonable warmth all through the growing season combined with heatwaves in January meant harvest started early and was over extremely quickly. But with sunshine comes flavour and 2024 does not disappoint in fruit weight and concentration. No rain and plenty of sun means wines hit their optimal ripeness (albeit earlier than expected!) and created wines with great depth of flavour and extract.

The ample marri blossom and dry conditions meant both bird and disease pressures were low, the main thing keeping us awake at night was the water stress on our dry grown vines. Both whites and reds show opulence and power that so far show great promise for the future.

COLOUR
Deep mulberry, ripe cherry with purple hues, showing youth and vitality.

CELLAR
Drink now or cellar up to 50 years.

BOUQUET
Violets and wild rose with mulberry, satsuma plum and cigar box, expanding into liquorice, cherry and chocolate, finished with iodine, ironstone and a hint of curry leaf.

PALATE
Elegant and perfumed, yet intense and highly attractive, showing beautiful fruit density, balance and opulent structure. Fine tannins expand gracefully across the palate, revealing layers of cassis, mulberry and cherry with rich cacao, lifted by floral rose notes and savoury plum. The back palate is wrapped in ironstone and cigar box, laced with cedar and sandalwood, finishing with grace, silk-like length and true finesse.

FOOD
Wagyu sirloin with caramelised shallot and beef jus; roasted heirloom carrots with honey, thyme, and olive oil.

Cullen

The Cullen property has been in the Cullen family since 1948 with founders Diana Madeline and Kevin John planting the first vines on the farm in 1971.

Today Cullen sits as one of the top estates in Margaret River. Their impeccable versions of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are now both considered clear regional benchmarks.

The Cullen estate is farmed with a strict adherence to the principals of biodynamic farming. Current day owner and winemaker Vanya Cullen is one of the most outspoken advocates of the benefits of these practices in the industry and her results speak for themselves.

These are extraordinary wines that hold their own against the world's best. A gem of the Australian wine scene, to be sure.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
