An elegant, biodynamic Cabernet blend that captures both the warmth of the 2024 season and Cullen’s signature finesse, without needing a decade in the cellar to show its best.

Description

Made from biodynamically farmed fruit across both the Cullen and Mangan vineyards, this is a more relaxed take on the flagship Diana Madeline, though the pedigree is unmistakable. The fruit—mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a good splash of Merlot—was harvested early in February during one of the driest vintages on record, bringing in small but deeply concentrated berries.

Fermentation was wild and gentle, with skin contact ranging from 5 to 11 days depending on the parcel. It was then matured in mostly seasoned French oak for 8 months (only 23% new), allowing the wine to soften without losing its focus.

You can crack into this now and enjoy its plush feel and fine tannins, but give it a few years and it’ll flesh out beautifully. A quiet overachiever in Cullen’s line-up.

"A very purple tasting wine here with a mix of blue and black fruits, pimento/capsicum, baking spice, dried roses, and something a bit ferrous. It’s medium-bodied, but quite thick and chewy, not polished up too much, and also has some bitter dark chocolate in the mix, blackcurrant, dried herbs, balanced acidity, and a finishes with some roast red capsicum and a fair bit of perfume. Lots of Cullen in your glass at pretty fair price, if you take my meaning."

    Good experience of this lable

Nicely balanced and will improve with time

2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. But with sunshine comes flavour and 2024 does not disappoint in fruit weight and concentration, with small but precise yielding 4.2 ton/Ha at Cullen Vineyard for the Cabernet Sauvignon.

2024 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is a straight blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, with has created a wine of great depth supported by delicious fine-grained tannins.

Cullen

The Cullen property has been in the Cullen family since 1948 with founders Diana Madeline and Kevin John planting the first vines on the farm in 1971.

Today Cullen sits as one of the top estates in Margaret River. Their impeccable versions of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are now both considered clear regional benchmarks.

The Cullen estate is farmed with a strict adherence to the principals of biodynamic farming. Current day owner and winemaker Vanya Cullen is one of the most outspoken advocates of the benefits of these practices in the industry and her results speak for themselves.

These are extraordinary wines that hold their own against the world's best. A gem of the Australian wine scene, to be sure.
