Description

Crawford River is renowned for crafting some of Australia’s finest Rieslings, and the 2024 Strata Riesling reflects what vigneron Belinda Thomson describes as “one of the best seasons seen at Crawford River in years.”

Previously known as the Young Vines Riesling, the Strata comes from a block planted in 2000/01. The vineyard’s loam-rich soils over a limestone base lend this wine an open, expressive style. Designed to be fresh and approachable, the now-mature vines add an extra layer of depth and complexity.

The 2024 vintage bursts with aromas of white florals, stone fruit, and a hint of musk. On the palate, it’s crisp and finely textured, with a chalky minerality and a refreshing finish that lingers. This is Riesling made to enjoy now, but it has enough structure to reward a little patience.

From one of the country’s most iconic producers, the 2024 Strata Riesling is a perfect balance of elegance and drinkability.

"From a block planted in '00/'01 on loam-dominant soils. A very bright green gold. Aromatic with classic citrus fruits together with some white peach, ripe pear, orange blossom and jasmine. Mouth-wateringly juicy and delicious with an underlying, fine vein of acidity. It's super now and will continue to be so for quite some time. Yum."

94 points - "Flavourtown starring riesling! This has width and depth, a sumptuousness yet the tickle of brine and crushed granite minerality feels stippled through the wine. The mainstays are cumquat, green apple, a touch of blackcurrant, even some laid back tropical fruit notes and a squeeze of mandarin. It has that kind of open weave deliciousness and gulpability that urges drinking. Great to see this somewhat jazzy and looser knit riesling from this great producer. All in." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

2024 Strata Riesling

Season Highlights
The 2023/24 season provided excellent growing conditions, resulting in wines with great purity and definition. It was a dream vintage for vignerons and one of the best seen at Crawford River in years.

After a somewhat dry start to spring, significant rainfall in late November ensured a fabulous flowering, especially for Riesling. Brief but heavy rains in late December and early January prepared the vineyard for a dry six weeks that followed. Veraison in mid-February progressed smoothly, and nets were applied earlier than usual. Harvest began on March 21, marking the earliest pick in years, with immaculate and plentiful fruit—a welcome change after previous low-yielding seasons.

Winery Process
Both crushed and whole clusters were pressed directly to stainless steel tanks for sediment settling. A combination of spontaneous fermentation and commercial yeast was used for fermentation in steel tanks. The wine spent approximately eight weeks on lees before racking and sulphur addition. Afterward, the wine remained on fine lees for an additional month before blending and filtration. Bottled in September 2024 under screwcap. No fining agents were used.

Vineyard
This Riesling originates from a block planted in 2000/1 at the western edge of the original vineyards. While the top of the block features ironstone-rich gravelly ridges, most of it consists of loamy soils over a limestone base. These unique factors, along with microclimatic influences, produce an expressive and generous wine, especially as a young vintage.

Winemaker’s Notes
This wine showcases intense white floral aromas with a powdery musk perfume and fresh white peach notes. It has a chalky texture balanced by a long line of natural acidity and inherent minerality. The salivating acidity is complemented by a soft, supple roundness, making it utterly delicious for drinking.

Crawford River

Crawford River is very much a family operation. The talented Thomson clan have been producing wine from their beautiful home vineyard since 1985.

The Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc thrive on the estate, but it's Riesling that they are most famous for.

They produce a range of styles of varying ages that are outstanding. Many consider them as one of the country's premier producers of the noble variety.

These are wines of purity and elegance. Small-batch, family-owned, traditional winemaking and good, honest farming is at the core of everything Crawford River does.
