Description

This is Coriole doing what they do best – pulling something distinctive, original and deeply drinkable out of left field. From their Sandalwood site in the foothills of McLaren Flat, this blend of Grenache Gris, Piquepoul and a dash of Clairette is a bright, textured white that’s hard to pin down and harder to stop sipping.

Picked and fermented together in concrete, it’s got that perfect balance of creamy mouthfeel and crisp, salty drive. The Grenache Gris brings flesh and spice, while Piquepoul lifts the whole thing with its trademark acidity. The result is a wine that feels familiar and completely new at the same time – full of stone fruit, citrus and a whisper of orchard bloom, with enough structure to hold its own at the table.

This is modern McLaren Vale white winemaking at its most exciting – playful, thoughtful and utterly moreish. Extremely limited.

"Intensely expressive, like a stroll through an orchard in blossom... cascading with flavour. Then all is refined by a pristinely natural acid line. It’s utterly delicious."

96 points - "From the Sandalwood vineyard in the McLaren Flat foothills. Approximately 45/40/15% grenache gris/picpoul/clairette, as hand picked into same bins. Co-fermented in concrete, then returned for 10 months' élevage. Intensely expressive, like a stroll through an orchard in blossom, then rolling into a complex melange of orchard fruits and a dizzying layering of pear, apple and stone fruit cultivars. Feels distinctly heirloom, rather than the usual suspects. There are also hints of spice, nutmeg and cinnamon. It’s textural, slippery but a little pithy, too, generous, cascading with flavour. Then all is refined by a pristinely natural acid line. It’s utterly delicious." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Aromas of peaches, white nectarines, ginger, lemon pith and yellow apples. The palate is medium-bodied with generous texture and focused acidity, showing orange rind, grapefruit, chamomile and spices. Refreshing and delightful. Drink now." - JamesSuckling.com

    Great Aussie White Blend.

Ripe melon and a lovely background acid.

Beautiful golden colour and a slight salinity

Just a touch of bruised fruit that dulls the acidity a touch, but no big deal. Lot's going on and would buy again.

Our Sandalwood vineyard is planted to grenache gris and piquepoul on a rocky slope in the foothills of McLaren Flat. These varieties are picked together and co-fermented to create a rich and textured wine with brightness and lift.

Coriole

Coriole is a McLaren Vale institution.

It's a winery with two sides. On one hand, they craft classic regional versions of Shiraz and Cabernet which are exemplary. On the other, they have been a trailblazer for emerging varieties (Italian varieties, in particular) in Australia.

Owner and winemaker, Mark Lloyd was one of the first in the country to experiment with Sangiovese and Fiano and has been hugely influential in bringing these varieties into the Australian wine zeitgeist.

Today, Mark's son Duncan has taken over the winemaking duties and his brother Peter as General Manager. The experimentation with emerging varieties continues under their guidance with Nero d'Avola, Negroamaro, and Piquepoul having come into the fold. Coriole never stands still. They are trailblazers who have had a huge impact on the changing face of modern Australian wine.
