Description

Cobaw Ridge has been doing its own thing in the Macedon Ranges since the late ’80s, long before the region got the recognition it has today. Alan and Nelly Cooper were early adopters of organics and biodynamics, and their hands-on approach hasn’t changed much since – small vineyard, no chemicals, and a very deliberate focus on letting the site do the talking.

Their Syrah comes off granite soils high up in the Cobaw Ranges, one of the coolest spots in the region. The fruit is hand-picked, fermented with wild yeasts, and aged in large, old oak to keep it clean and savoury. The result is a wine with real presence but no heaviness – dark fruit, spice and a firm, stony edge that speaks of altitude and restraint.

It’s a proper cool-climate Australian Syrah – detailed, structured and made with care rather than fuss.

As is the way of Cobaw Ridge, the marginal but exceptional, biodynamic-tended site, the pursuit of quality… this wine hasn’t been released for five years. Now we have it again from 2024.

It’s got a swish to texture, levity, purity of fruit, but swagger too. The first thing that came to mind was ‘black olives’ then ‘black cherry’ then you get the cavalcade of game meat savouriness dosed with exotic spice, cola, alpine herbs, black pepper and beetroot earthy-sweetness. It’s got surprising concentration and depth, yet the shimmy of silty, granitic tannins does wonders for tension and refreshing the palate, the wine sits at medium weight and extends long on its cherry-olive credentials. It’s beautiful, balanced, energetic, flowing. A wine of immense charm and interest.

Cobaw Ridge

Alan and Nelly Cooper established their Macedon Ranges vineyard in 1985. The first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region, the Coopers firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard so the vines and the integrity of their fruit are their first priorities.

They grow some of the region’s best examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Australia’s most sought-after example of Lagrein. Over the years Alan's winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. With sulphur now the only addition in the winery and Alan using more inert vessels such as Qvevri, the Cobaw Ridge Wines have never looked better.

Small, family-owned, sensitively-grown, hand-crafted wines - this is why we love Australian wine.
