Description

Alan and Nelly Cooper have always done things their own way at Cobaw Ridge. Tucked high in the Macedon Ranges on granite soils, their small biodynamic vineyard has been the source of some of Victoria’s most distinctive cool-climate wines since the late ’80s. L’Altra – meaning “the other” – is their playful blend of Syrah and Pinot Noir, two varieties that thrive in this chilly, elevated site.

The 2024 brings the best of both worlds: the fragrance and lift of Pinot with the spice and structure of Syrah. Everything is hand-picked, fermented with native yeasts and matured in old oak – nothing forced, just the vineyard doing its thing. The result is bright and savoury, medium-bodied and layered with red and dark fruit, herbs and a touch of earth.

It’s a proper Cobaw wine – individual, thoughtful and full of character.

"It’s delicious, it’s bright... Vibrant and inviting."

93 points - "A syrah but it gets dosed up with pinot noir and lagrein. It’s built for speed. I tried it normally, formally, then I got my stainless steel camping coffee cup and put that in the fridge, so too the wine, and then poured the wine into the stainless cup to about three quarters full, and then threw the stick to the dog in the yard a while, to see how the wine worked in real life. It’s delicious, it’s bright, it has a light crunch and crisp edges. It feels relatively straight forward, very light weight, but there’s plenty to sink one’s teeth into in terms of red cherry, a lick of maraschino cherry, a dash of fennel/aniseed, some faint game meat notes and doses of alpine herb – enough on for those seeking a little solace in detail. Then again, it’s got this sense of fun while also dialling in enough interest – that’s what I am leaning into. Vibrant and inviting." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Cobaw Ridge

Alan and Nelly Cooper established their Macedon Ranges vineyard in 1985. The first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region, the Coopers firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard so the vines and the integrity of their fruit are their first priorities.

They grow some of the region’s best examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Australia’s most sought-after example of Lagrein. Over the years Alan's winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. With sulphur now the only addition in the winery and Alan using more inert vessels such as Qvevri, the Cobaw Ridge Wines have never looked better.

Small, family-owned, sensitively-grown, hand-crafted wines - this is why we love Australian wine.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
