Description

Clonakilla’s Chardonnay comes from the Johansen family vineyards in Tumbarumba, one of the coolest, highest spots in NSW. Sitting around 700 metres above sea level, it’s a place that consistently produces fruit with freshness, energy and real clarity of flavour.

2024 was a strong vintage in Tumbarumba – warm sunny days, cool nights, and a calm autumn that let the grapes ripen slowly. The fruit was in great shape, and the wine reflects that with bright citrus and stonefruit at its core, wrapped up in crisp acidity and fine French oak.

There’s a touch of flinty reduction at first pour, but it quickly unfolds into something layered and complex. It’s full of flavour yet still feels light on its feet, with texture and length that make it a cut above. Already delicious but clearly built to age, this is cool-climate Chardonnay at its best.

Tim Kirk sources his Chardonnay from high altitude – around 700 metres – vineyards in Tumbarumba. It would be fair to say that I suspect most people do not think of Clonakilla when they are talking top level Chardonnay, but, on the evidence of wines like this, I have no idea why. This is all class. An absolute belter. The grapes were whole bunch pressed into French oak puncheons, 30% new. Straw gold in hue, this is a fabulous Chardonnay and it revealed more every time one looked at it. There is already some serious complexity here. We have notes of cashews, a touch of hazelnuts, white peaches, jasmine, stone fruits, florals and ginger on the nose. There is fresh juicy acidity and the creamiest of textures. A flick of oak is still evident as integration proceeds and notes of apricot kernels emerge on the palate. There is real energy and excellent length here. Love it. Drink for six years, longer if need be.

When I first opened this the flint/matchstick notes were pronounced, but when I returned to take a proper look at it maybe 30 minutes later I had to look hard to detect those characters at all. This is a wine of balance, fruit power, length and complexity; it’s a standout. It tastes of custard apple and cream fraiche, stonefruit and flint, fennel seeds and smoked bacon, and while it’s fresh-faced and juicy in general it has plenty of sophisticated flavour, and texture, rolling through the back third of the wine. Start to finish, this is excellent.

2024 is a beautiful vintage. Good spring rain, warm summer days, cool nights and a glorious early autumn. It has delivered an elegant, fragrant Chardonnay with ripe citrus and stonefruit flavours gently framed by high quality French oak and classic cool-climate mineral acids.

Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years.
