Description

This is a beautiful rendition of cool climate Chardonnay from Jeff Byrne. This is Jeff's fifth go at this Chardonnay and he's nailed it again.

Grown at 900m elevation in Orange, the fruit was handpicked early in a warm 2024 season and whole-bunch pressed straight to large French oak (35% new) for a long, easy ferment and 10 months of rest. It’s a style that leans into freshness over fatness - green apple, melon and white peach up front, with a clean line of acidity and a lick of struck match and creamy phenolics through the mid-palate.

The texture’s dialled in beautifully, flinty and fine, with just enough grip to make it food-friendly but never hard work.

Effortless drinking now, but it’s got the bones to evolve if you’ve got the patience (or fridge space) to let it. Just like Jeff's reds, it's an easy-going and relaxed number with drinkability in spades.

Great follow up from the 2023. Tasted blind at the Orange Wine Show in September and it was a no-blinking, no-brainer moment. 95 points. Boom. I retrieved my original note from the day of judgment. Here is. Chaotic—wine show style.

Nougat, milk powder, oatmeal, custard powder, apple, lemon, zesty, zingy palate, a bit salty in the finish. Driving. Beautiful composition, mouthwatering. Absolutely delicious, effortless, graceful drinking.

You could imply it’s the Nova Scotian blood in his veins that drew Jeff Byrne from the Hunter Valley to the relative refrigeration of Orange, but I’d say the opportunity to make wines like this motivated him even more. Delicate white peach and grapefruit, some Granny Smith crunch too. A quartz crunch through the finish. There’s a palpable energy at play here, a dynamism that suggests Byrne has found his happy place.

Another release, the fifth from Jeff Byrne, is another wine of tension and purity. He understands the assignment to make the most of Orange’s distinct soils and altitude. Pomelo pulp, lemon sorbet and white peach. Crisp orchard apples and freesia. This is dripping in fruit richness and oak plays second fiddle to the citrus heart. This is chardonnay after all and it's fleshed out in the sides and round curves where it should be. Acidity pushes the wine forward and up a steady incline without being sour or discordant. Some white pepper, nutmeg and sour dough on the finish. This is extreme value for money and the kind of chardonnay that modern day fanatics of the variety are coveting.

    Value For Money

Balanced flavour and good value for the money without being outstanding

We’re pleased to release our 2024 Chardonnay.

Our fifth release of our Byrne Farm Chardonnay in the cool climate region of Orange, grown at approximately 900m above sea level. The 2024 Vintage, was a warmer year with harvest times occurring 6 weeks earlier than the 2023 vintage. Our Chardonnay was handpicked, whole bunch pressed with the cloudy juice put to large French oak, 35% of which was new oak, for fermentation and aged for 10 months. This wine shows green apple, white peach and green melon fruits with flinty, textured notes balanced with a mineral, crisp finish.
