Description

Nero d’Avola is a variety that is right up Andre and Selina’s alley. It pops out of the glass with all things juicy, bright and extremely gluggable - all things we typically associate with the red wines made by this duo at Bondar Wines.

The young vines the fruit is harvested from gives a lighter feel to the wine, with freshness and soft structure. It’s an ideal red for any day or time, and popping it in the fridge for a slight chill won’t go astray.

This wine is a small make release, so get your hands on a bottle while you still can.

This year, Andre Bondar sourced Nero d’Avola from two vineyards. Andre has been working with one of the sites for years, located in the Sellicks Foothills subregion behind Willunga, where the soil is rocky alluvial clay. Here, the vines sit at 100 metres, face west and give fruit with high-toned aromatics and soft, red berry character. The second site is located near Tatachilla, between Andre and Selina’s McLaren Vale home and the sea. This site's soil is black Biscay clay and gives a contrasting profile, with more density, darkness and structure. Being a warmer site, Tatachilla was picked first, followed three weeks later by Willunga. The Tatachilla fruit was destemmed and fermented for 12 days, while the Willunga fruit fermented as bunches for two weeks. Blending and bottling occurred in September.

Now in its sixth year, Andre Bondar continues to craft a youthful and fresh Nero that exudes youthful splendour. True to the season, the 2024 Nero is a cool, fresh, brightly flavoured wine with all the berry fruits, spice and earthy flavours inherent to the variety, backed up by lively acidity and a delicious savoury close. A joy to drink.

Bondar Wines

Andre & Selina Bondar are one of the great modern Australian wine success stories. We have been massive fans of their wines since their very first vintage and tell anyone who will listen that if you want to taste what modern McLaren Vale wines are all about then this is who you need to try.

Their home block, the highly decorated Rayner Vineyard, which straddles the Blewitt Springs and Seaview sub-regions of The Vale, was originally planted back in the 1950s but the Bondar family chapter in that vineyard's story will be its most significant. Dre and Sel's wines are honest and vibrant, built more on freshness and digestibility rather than raw South Australian power.

They make brilliant, vibrant Grenache, balanced and concentrated Shiraz, elegant Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, and one of the country's most bankable Rose wines plus a raft of small-batch alternative varieties. Their range nails quality and drinkability at every turn.
