Description

Billy Button is the passion project of Jo Marsh, one of the Alpine Valleys’ most talented winemakers, supported by her husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips. Known for crafting small-batch wines from offbeat varieties, Billy Button is all about showcasing the beauty of the Alpine Valleys with a fresh and creative approach.

The 2024 Rosato is made entirely from Sangiovese, sourced from Ferraro Vineyards in Myrtleford. Delicately machine-harvested, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel, this rosé sees time on yeast lees for added texture while maintaining a focus on freshness.

Pale salmon in colour, it offers delicate aromas of strawberry leaf, red cherry, and a hint of fairy floss. The palate is light and refreshing, with bright red fruit flavours, a soft textural element, and a crisp, dry finish. It’s balanced, uncomplicated, and delightfully drinkable—an ideal companion for sunny days or casual gatherings.

The Billy Button Rosato is yet another example of Jo Marsh’s gentle, thoughtful winemaking style, highlighting the charm of alternative varieties from the Alpine Valleys.

The “Alpine” range consists of value wines designed for immediate enjoyment. It includes a Bianco, Rosato, Rosso, Prosecco, and Sparkling Red. The components vary each year based on the season, with careful blending to create interesting wines that feature a variety of flavors. Although produced on a slightly larger scale than other Billy Button wines, all components are crafted using a small-batch ethos and kept separate until the final blending stage.

The 2024 Rosato
• Variety: 100% Sangiovese, sourced from Ferraro Vineyards in Myrtleford.

Production Notes
Machine harvested, crushed, and pressed to stainless steel. The juice was cold-settled, then racked and divided into several batches. Each tank was inoculated with a different selected yeast and fermented at 13–15°C. Sulfur was added post-fermentation to retain freshness. The wine spent time on yeast lees before blending and clarification. Bottled in July 2024.

Tasting Notes
This wine is an attractive salmon pink with beautifully fragrant, delicate aromas of fairy floss and strawberry leaf. Strawberry and red cherry notes complement the palate, which is textural yet delicate—qualities enhanced by time on lees. Crisp and absolutely smashable.
