Description

Hawke's Bay might be famous for Cabernet, but Syrah probably should be the real calling card of the region. Bilancia sits at the top of the tree with their flagship 'La Collina', but this estate release offers a perfect introduction to their style without the need to wait a decade.

Sourced from the Roys Hill sub-region, this is a blend of two vineyards. The backbone comes from the Trelinnoe site (90%), but crucially, it includes a 10% splash of fruit from the steep, rocky La Collina slopes. That addition adds a layer of pedigree that you don't often see at this price point.

This is classic cool-climate Syrah. It leans towards the darker end of the fruit spectrum, offering notes of black plum, licorice and a distinct hit of garden herbs and baking spice. It is aromatic and tangy, with gentle, ripe tannins that make it incredibly approachable right now. While the flagship demands patience, this is made to be opened and enjoyed immediately, though it has enough stuffing to evolve over the next six to eight years.

"A perfumed syrah with aromas of blueberries, dark cherries, white pepper, violets and hints of meat, earth and iodine. Fresh and lively with a medium body, tense acidity and vivid and crunchy fruit, offering freshness and poise. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

The 2024 Syrah is so good. It's medium-bodied, supple, spicy and a little bloody. The soil is gravelly, although there are other aspects in there, and the vines are 25 years old. While the fruit has a stalky character, there were no whole bunches included in this ferment. It has a blood orange, Campari, cherry-seed character. There is a very small addition here of the Uvaggio Field Blend in this wine, and it contributes to the floral polish of the wine. It seems to soften the edges of the tannins in the mouth, and as the wine feels complete, I would attribute part of that success to this. This is a lovely wine, as per usual.

    Surprisingly good

We expecting it to be lighter than it was coming from NZ.

Really nice wine for the price point.

Bilancia Syrah was sourced from two vineyards at Roys Hill, Hawke’s Bay; la collina and Trelinnoe. From both vineyards perfect Syrah fruit was harvested separately and crushed to open top vessels for fermentation. The wines were pressed at dryness and run to either older French oak barriques or stainless steel tanks. The final wine is a blend of approximately 10% from la collina and 90% from Trelinnoe vineyard.

Sweet, ripe berry fruits and plums, fresh and juicy fruit coupled with Hawke’s Bay spice, balanced acidity and ripe, gentle tannins. A great wine for opening on release, this amazing 2020 Syrah is a vibrant, youthful wine and can be enjoyed immediately but it will also continue to develop over the next six to eight years.
