Description

Like its Pinot Noir counterpart, the Applecross Chardonnay has found a new home at the historic St Andrews site in the Yarra Valley. Sourced from a block of P58 clone vines planted back in 1984, this release combines that old-vine depth with Dave Bicknell's signature obsession with drive and detail. If you like your Chardonnay with cut and precision, this is right in the slot.

The winemaking here is deliberate and stripped back. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed straight to a mix of puncheons and hogsheads for a natural ferment. Crucially, Dave blocked the malolactic fermentation entirely. That decision preserves the natural malic acid, keeping the wine taut and nervy. It spent 11 months on lees to build some texture, but the focus remains firmly on freshness rather than weight.

It is pure and energetic, opening with a distinct hit of matchstick reduction that gives way to lime zest, white peach and white flowers. There is an intricate structure here - it feels linear and focused, with a bright line of acidity that pulls everything long. It holds its complexity without an ounce of flab, making it a joy to drink now but giving it the balance to age beautifully. One of the best Applecross Chardonnays to date.

The Wine Front 96 Points

I’m stunned by the concentration of fruit flavour here. If this wine called me on the telephone I’d be holding the receiver away from my ear – actually that’s not quite accurate because the flavour here is delicious, but you get the idea. The bottle cap should say Warning: Gale Force Flavour. These flavours play in the pear, grapefruit, tinned peach and lime arenas, with (subtle) flint and nougat characters as highlights. There’s pineapple-like acidity in action too, the latter emphasising just how drenched in flavour the acidity itself is, for starters, but also keeping the wine fresh and vigorous. The overall impression: A Class.

From the now defunct Lance's vineyard in St. Andrews, planted in 1984. Whole-bunch pressed to older puncheons. The combination of a cool year and a warm site works beautifully here. A bright green gold. Aromas of perfectly ripened stone fruits meet a little grilled cashew and gentle saline scents in this gorgeous wine. Gently fleshy but with that trademark Bicknell purity of fruit and backbone. Long. Lovely.

The 2024 Applecross Chardonnay is sourced from St. Andrews in the Yarra Valley. Made with P58 clone fruit that was planted in 1984, it was naturally fermented and matured in French oak puncheons. Aromatically, the wine leads with white peach and ripe lime flesh, green apple, crushed shells and pressed linen. On the palate, it is pure, with gorgeous clarity and precision. There are notes of crushed nuts and almond meal through the finish pepper it with layers of textural grip and complexity. This is a beautiful wine. 13.1% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

    Fabulous Yarra Chardonnay

Lovely Chard from Dave Bicknells own label. Seriously sophisticated.

From the 1984 plantings of P58 cropped at 4.5 t/Ha. Hand-picked on the 19th of February and whole bunch pressed directly to a mixture of 500 Lt puncheons and 300 Lt hogsheads. Fermentation commenced naturally and completed over 3 weeks until dry before sulphuring to prevent malo and preserve acidity. The wine remained on its lees for 11 months prior to bottling in late February 2025. 174 dozen bottles made.
