Description

The Young Vine Pinot Meunier from Best’s Great Western is the bright, playful sibling to their legendary Old Vine Pinot Meunier, coming from one of Australia’s most historic vineyards, where “young” means vines dating back to 1970.

Fresh and lively, this Pinot Meunier bursts with aromas of strawberry, cranberry, and hints of old rose petal, all laced with a delicate spice -think pink peppercorn, cinnamon, and a dash of star anise. The palate delivers a juicy mix of cherries, plums, and even a subtle orange peel twist, balanced by fine, crunchy tannins that keep it lean and engaging. There’s a delightful earthiness here too, anchoring the fruit and lending an old-world charm.

For those who can’t wait for the Old Vine to work its magic over decades, the Young Vine Pinot Meunier offers immediate pleasure that’ll hold up beautifully for another 8–10 years. Delicious, undeniably charming, and a must-try for anyone keen to taste history in the making.

Generally used in sparkling wine production, Pinot Meunier is rarely made as a straight-table red wine. However, at Best's we have been producing small quantities of single-varietal red wines from Pinot Meunier since the 1960s, with the vineyards and wines gaining cult-like status (and loyal followers) along the way. This unique wine comes from our ‘Young Vine’ plantings of Pinot Meunier which were established in 1970- a century after our “old vine” plantings and grown from cuttings of those original vines.

TASTING NOTES
Colour : Medium red intensity with a ruby/garnet hue. Bouquet : A complex bouquet of crushed strawberries, cherry, spice, and dried herb.
Palate : A fresh vibrant palate filled with red berries, cherries, and orange peel. This wine is well balanced with fine tannins and crunchy acidity. Good to drink in the short term but it should age well for 7-15 years.
Vintage : Vintage 2023 began with a very wet spring. Rain and cool temperatures were the theme up until Christmas. Into the new year, the rain ceased, and some warmer weather followed. The 2023 vintage was long and late with the first Pinot Meunier grapes being harvested in Mid-March. This long cool vintage allowed fruit flavours to mature, while natural acidity was retained.

Our Winemaker Jacob's thoughts on the 'perfect pairing'...

Baked Figs with Blue Cheese:
Now I believe that baked figs with blue cheese works really well with the Young Vine Pinot Meunier because traditionally figs pair very well with other fruits, specifically citrus fruit. Pinot Meunier really expresses primary flavours of blood orange citrus, so that’s a really good pairing.

The blue cheese adds a lot of richness to the dish and the Pinot Meunier is naturally an acidic red variety. It just manages to cut through the richness with the acid keeping the pair, quite fresh and vibrant so you get like a rich, sweet, fig and cheese match with good citrus and acidity that creates the perfect pairing.

Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
