Description

Bass Phillip stands right at the top of the Australian Pinot hierarchy, and their Premium bottling is the wine that originally cemented that reputation. Now under the guidance of Burgundy's Jean-Marie Fourrier, the estate continues to manage these ultra-high-density, dry-grown vines in South Gippsland with obsessive care. This particular cuvée is selected from the absolute best blocks of the property, representing a significant step up in power, depth, and age-worthiness from the Estate release.

The 2024 season was unusually long and cool, throwing cold winds at the vines during flowering and dragging the ripening process out until late March. This slow hang-time naturally restricted yields to a tiny, incredibly concentrated crop with thick skins and high natural acidity. Fermented with native yeasts and handled with Fourrier’s typical light touch in the cellar, the wine spent its maturation in top-tier French oak to frame its immense structural power.

The nose is brooding and deeply layered, revealing dark cherry, spiced plum, damp earth, and an exotic hint of star anise. On the palate, it delivers a massive wave of dark-fruited concentration, yet it feels remarkably light on its feet thanks to a bright, mineral-driven acidity and a grid of fine, muscular tannins.

This is an incredibly deep, profound wine that needs a few years in the cellar to fully unlock its layers, asserting itself as the ultimate collector-grade icon of Australian Pinot Noir.

97 points - "Deep ruby to garnet with bold, bright red cherry to red plum and Campari aromas, laced with broken rock mineral nuances, the palate firm and tense with grip and serious intent, and took a while to open up and reveal its wonderful display of fruit. Firm and somewhat shy at first pour, with oak still evident, it has great depth and should reveal even more if given time. Pour it into as big-bowl glass." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

94 points - "This 2024 Premium Pinot Noir has a strong whole bunchy feel with beautifully composed layers of dark cherry and woody herbs with a lining of Szechuan pepper and licorice. Complex and a little wild showing strong meaty, earthy and cola tones. Most notable is the firm structure thanks to chewy tannins and vibrant, balanced acidity which builds to a strong finish. A wine built with cellaring in mind. 2030-2040." - Angus Hughson (Wine Pilot)

Tasting Note

Glace cherries and savory, dusty notes greet the nose initially but also showing hints of vanilla and spice; refined and poised at this stage but rest assured complexity will crescendo with time. The palate is svelte and satiny, lovely balance, resolved and complete with lovely length that will only get better with age. If drunk young we recommend decanting for an hour or so

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
