Description

While Bass Phillip built its legendary name on Pinot Noir, their Premium Chardonnay is equally rare and revered among collectors. Jean-Marie Fourrier brings his master-level Burgundian touch to these close-planted, low-yielding South Gippsland vines, treating Chardonnay with the same fanatical precision as his reds. This flagship white is sourced from the absolute best parcels of the estate, aiming for maximum complexity and structural power.

The 2024 vintage was a cold, slow-burning year that forced the grapes to hang on the vine until late March. This extended season kept yields tiny but loaded the fruit with intense flavor and a piercing natural acidity. In the cellar, the fruit went through a gentle wild fermentation and spent its maturation in high-quality French oak barrels, letting the natural richness of the fruit integrate seamlessly with the wood.

The nose opens with white peach, Meyer lemon, toasted hazelnut, and a flinty, struck-match mineral character. The palate is intensely concentrated and textural, balancing its creamy, barrel-aged weight with a laser-sharp beam of cool-climate acidity that drives a remarkably long finish.

This is a monumental, tightly wound white that easily rivals Grand Cru Burgundy, solidifying Bass Phillip as a true dual-threat master of both colours.

96 points - "This 2024 Premium Chardonnay is a wine that whispers rather than shouts, choosing subtlety over overt displays of power. Tightly bound with layers of flint, blanched almond, citrus and oatmeal offer a compelling opening. Strong Burgundian theme here, with the chalky, citrus flavours compact, well defined and focussed with tension and vigour keeping weighty flavours in check. Fantastic energy and shape here which guarantees a long and fruitful future. 2032-2046." - Angus Hughson (Wine Pilot)

94 points - "Medium-full yellow colour; smoky, bready yeast lees and buttery pie crust aromas, the palate rich and round, soft and ample, with intense lemony core surrounded by pastry and buttery shortbread flavours, finishing with a firming grip of tannin and some alcohol warmth. Long finish. A generous, worked wine, in classic Burgundy style." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Tasting Note

Highly fragrant, white linen, a twist of lemon with peachy, nectarine base notes and a hint of nougat. The palate is incredibly focused by a core of acid that provides drive and length with a supple lithe mid palate and delicious flavours that mirror the nose run the length of the palate. Certainly, made for the long haul...but enjoyable now

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
