Description

Bass Phillip remains the absolute pinnacle of Australian Pinot Noir, with Burgundian icon Jean-Marie Fourrier now guiding the legacy of this close-planted South Gippsland estate. Working alongside the original vineyard team, Fourrier continues to champion the ultra-low yields and meticulous, soil-driven farming that made Bass Phillip famous worldwide. This 'estate' release is designed to offer a purer, site-focused look at their iconic Leongatha vineyards.

The 2024 growing season was a true year of patience, defined by cold winds during flowering and a cool, damp summer that slowed the ripening of the fruit down to a crawl. Harvest was pushed all the way out to late March, allowing the small crop to build exceptional flavor complexity and aromatic precision. This is the first vintage processed entirely in the new, state-of-the-art Kardella winery, where traditional destemming and minimal handling preserved the vintage's deep concentration and serious structural framework.

The nose is tight but highly intricate, showing red cherry accents, rose petals, charred radicchio, and a complex dusting of savory spice. The palate is structurally dense, firm, and deliberately closed in its youth, matching its concentrated core of wild berry fruit with exceptionally fine, chalky tannins and a driving spine of natural acidity. This is a serious, coiled, and architectural release of this wine, built arguably more mid-term cellaring than for immediate drinkability.

92 points - "Deep-ish red with subtle traces of purple; the first impression on the nose is of oak, giving a nutty/vanilla/chocolate note, while the palate is full and firm with solid tannin structure and quite concentrated fruit, still somewhat undeveloped and latent, needing time to fully express itself. It has depth and structure at the expense of charm at this stage. Certainly worth cellaring." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

92 points - "This 2024 Estate Pinot Noir is fine and fragrant opening up with red licorice, old leather, earth and spice aromas with immaculate purity of fruit. Understated with an earthy core of flavour while tangy acidity adds bite to a lingering, fresh and licorice root scented finish. Charming now but sure to build over the medium term. 2026-3035." - Angus Hughson (Wine Pilot)

Tasting Note

Fragrant potpourri of aromas, rose petals and red berry notes, with a hint of China tea; the very essence of Pinot Noir. A classic iron fist in a velvet glove palate. A lush fruit driven middle, enveloped by powdery tannins with delicious flavours that dance delicately across the palate

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
