Description

The Bannockburn vineyard in Geelong produces some of Australia's most interesting Pinot Noir.

These 30+ year-old vines, planted by the legendary Gary Farr, yield fruit with immense power and concentration. There's a unique savouriness and gaminess that presents in most Pinot Noirs from this site.

Winemaker Matt Holmes is honing those characters and crafting the wine beautifully these days, allowing the vineyard to sing in full voice.

This is a regal, cellarworthy wine from one of the country's great viticultural sites. One that will mature beautifully with time in the cellar.

From vines planted between '76 and '07; 20% whole bunches and 25% new oak. A light, bright cherry red. Red fruited, with wild hedgerow, roses and a melange of spices. This is really lifted and perfumed on the bouquet. Light to medium bodied, this builds nicely across the palate with superfine and persistent tannins and bright acidity, giving the wine both structure and length. I can see this filling out very nicely over the next few years.

94+ points - "All the herbs and spices, of course, but the shells of nuts, woodsmoke, a chicory element and whispers of both black coffee and black tea, all of which swirl around sound, sure-footed cherry-berry fruit flavours. This wine is as complex as it is assured, its sinewy tannin finessed into place, its flavours cascading out through the finish. This will age beautifully, and is best consumed with at least another few years under its belt." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    Lovely stuff

Really enjoyed this one. A lovely and light, but serious pinot (no lolly water here).

A satisfying pinot. The palate is rich and smoky. Long finish. Good value, too.

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.

First impressions of this local Pinot Noir, well local for me, are one of surprise and delight.

Aromas of berry and a strong sense of self.

It’s as though the wine itself knows that it is a very good wine.

A peppery start that sits comfortably on the palate leaving a lingering sense of berry and passion fruit.

This wine maker knows their stuff, highly recommend and will scour the local outlets and continue my journey sampling this makers wares.

I look forward to the trip.

While the single vineyard wines tell unique stories, this wine has been telling the composite story of the season at Bannockburn through the lens of Pinot Noir. A blend of all our sites planted between 1976 & 2007.

Bannockburn Pinot Noir is made from a blend of estate fruit grown on our established vineyards; the oldest vines planted in 1976 through to the more recent 2007 planting. This release includes fruit grown across Olive Tree Hill (1976), 10 Rows (1991), Stuart Block (1997), Anns Block (2004) & De La Terre (2007) vineyards. The clonal mix includes MV6, 114, 115 and 777, with various vine spacings and planting densities.

Handpicked parcels of fruit were wild fermented separately with approximately 20% whole bunch overall including a portion of carbonic maceration. After pressing the wine was racked to a combination of hogsheads and puncheons of which 20% was new oak. The wine was left undisturbed for 10 months prior to blending and bottling.

Bannockburn

For over 50 years, Bannockburn has been a quiet force in Australian fine wine. The story began in 1974 when Stuart Hooper discovered and planted this now-iconic site in Victoria’s Moorabool Valley. In 1978, Gary Farr joined as winemaker, bringing a Burgundian lens that helped define the estate’s identity.

Today, Matt Holmes leads the winemaking, first stepping in for the 2005 vintage and returning permanently in 2015 after Michael Glover’s departure. Holmes’ style is thoughtful and site-first - guided by organics, minimal intervention, and an intuitive feel for balance. His Chardonnays are chiseled and composed. The Pinot Noirs - more precise than ever - are some of Victoria's best.

Viticulturist Lucas Grigsby, a 30-year veteran, tends the vines with the same hands-on, regenerative mindset. Together, they farm sustainably - straw mulching, composting, and nurturing cover crops - all to express the site with absolute clarity.

Bannockburn’s single-vineyard range tells the deeper story. S.R.H. Chardonnay draws tension and salinity from ancient marine sediments. The iconic Serré vineyard, planted densely in 1984, channels a Grand Cru sensibility. These are wines shaped by place, not ego. They hum with Burgundian influence, but speak fluently in an Australian accent.
