Description

The 1314 Pinot Noir is Bannockburn’s easygoing take on the variety - made to be enjoyed young, fresh, and without fuss, but still carrying the hallmarks of this legendary estate. The fruit comes from a mix of their estate plantings, including some seriously good sites, giving the wine both brightness and a little depth.

In the winery it’s kept lively: wild ferment, a bit of whole bunch, and some carbonic maceration to lift the aromatics. After that, it spends eight months in French oak, only a small portion new, so the fruit stays front and centre.

The 2024 is crunchy and bright, with red berries, florals, a touch of spice, and those fine tannins that make you want another sip straight away. It’s Pinot that feels youthful and expressive but still smartly put together - proof that Bannockburn can deliver class at every level.

"Bannockburn produces outstanding wines across the range, all with individuality, style, great complexity and depth of flavour."
- James Halliday

The Wine Front 90 Points

There’s plenty of interest here but then, that’s always the case with the wines of Bannockburn. This is a twiggy, autumnal Pinot Noir with spice, earth, ash, snapped twig and cola characters running through pure, sweet red cherry fruit flavour. It’s light-ish but there’s enough to satisfy, and the drinkability factor is high enough for me to polish off a bottle solo over the course of two nights. It’s a wine that isn’t too taxing, but still has plenty going on.

    Super smooth

An amazing Pinot … so easy to drink with a richness in taste that would be worthy of much bigger reds. Great buy

    Excellent

Very enjoyable Pinot Noir. Unashamedly fruit driven, an underlying spice note and subtle tannins on the finish prevent things from being too simple.

The 1314 range of wines are made from all estate grown fruit in a vibrant, nouveau style for early enjoyment and refreshing drinking.

Viticulture

1314 Pinot Noir is from a blend of vineyard sites from our property, primarily MV6, 114 & 115, planted in 1976, 1997 and 2004. The 2024 vintage is a barrel selection based on an earlier bottling regime and younger drinking window.

Winemaking

Parcels of Pinot Noir from our different blocks were fermented with indigenous yeast, approximately 25% whole bunch including a portion of carbonic maceration. The wine was matured for 8 months in primarily hogsheads of which 20% was new oak.

Tasting Note

The nose opens with dark red fruit aromas, autumnal earthy notes and some hints of bunchy spice. A touch of cola and some liquorice aromas come into play as well as classy and serious oak characters. In the mouth the wine is elegant but full flavoured, quite a powerful expression of Pinot Noir but with elegance and fine tannin. A lot of character and quality at this price point.

Bannockburn

For over 50 years, Bannockburn has been a quiet force in Australian fine wine. The story began in 1974 when Stuart Hooper discovered and planted this now-iconic site in Victoria’s Moorabool Valley. In 1978, Gary Farr joined as winemaker, bringing a Burgundian lens that helped define the estate’s identity.

Today, Matt Holmes leads the winemaking, first stepping in for the 2005 vintage and returning permanently in 2015 after Michael Glover’s departure. Holmes’ style is thoughtful and site-first - guided by organics, minimal intervention, and an intuitive feel for balance. His Chardonnays are chiseled and composed. The Pinot Noirs - more precise than ever - are some of Victoria's best.

Viticulturist Lucas Grigsby, a 30-year veteran, tends the vines with the same hands-on, regenerative mindset. Together, they farm sustainably - straw mulching, composting, and nurturing cover crops - all to express the site with absolute clarity.

Bannockburn’s single-vineyard range tells the deeper story. S.R.H. Chardonnay draws tension and salinity from ancient marine sediments. The iconic Serré vineyard, planted densely in 1984, channels a Grand Cru sensibility. These are wines shaped by place, not ego. They hum with Burgundian influence, but speak fluently in an Australian accent.
