Description

Crimson is Ata Rangi’s “younger sibling” Pinot, but it’s never just a simple second wine. Named in support of Project Crimson, the trust dedicated to protecting New Zealand’s native pōhutukawa and rātā trees, it’s a wine with both heart and purpose.

The fruit comes from younger vines on the Martinborough Terrace and is made with the same philosophy as Ata Rangi’s flagship Pinot: indigenous yeasts, gentle handling, no shortcuts. Mostly destemmed fruit keeps the style supple and fruit-driven, while a small whole-bunch component brings lift and spice.

The 2024 vintage was a standout across the region, and it shows here. Juicy red cherry, hibiscus and wild herbs lead into a palate that’s plush but fresh, with fine, velvety tannins and a flicker of crushed rock savouriness. It’s expressive, deliciously drinkable now, but with enough depth to develop for a few more years in the cellar.

Crimson remains one of the best introductions to Ata Rangi’s style – generous, approachable, and unmistakably Martinborough.

94 points - "It is delicious! A vibrant bouquet of fruit reflecting the variety and stellar vintage with aromas and flavours of ripe dark skinned red berry fruits, plum and cherry, baked raspberry and earth-smoke of dark clay and stone. There’s a judicious measure of wood with suggestions of some clove dust and vanilla then a gentle wood smoke quality. Fine tannins and medium+ acid line a wine ready to drink today and through 2032" - Cam Douglas MS (Cam Douglas MS)

94 points - "Elegantly perfumed and inviting, the bouquet shows sweet cherry, plum, floral, fennel, and toasted almond notes. The palate displays excellent weight and silky flow, complemented by fleshy texture and beautifully infused tannins, making it harmonious and balanced with a lengthy, velvety finish. At its best: now to 2032" - Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)

Customer Reviews

The season started well with no real frost damage and good canopy growth. Warm weather in October and November resulted in a good solid flowering. With low bunch good flowering was opportune. January was dry and very warm. Veraison started well around the 24th of January but stalled with the rain and cool weather that hit early February and continued throughout the month. Earlier ripening clones such as clone 5 and the Dijon selections were more adversely affected than our stalwart Abel.

Hand picking was slow and meticulous to ensure only the best fruit made it across the sorting table, the addition of the new Pellenc Destemmer meant that the fruit that made it to fermenter was in mint condition.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
