Description

This marks the debut release of a new single-vineyard wine from Alisdair and Kenisha Tulloch.

True to the Aeon philosophy, the name tells you everything you need to know about the dirt. 'Ferrosol' refers to the iron-rich, red earth (often called Terra Rossa) found at the tiny Hermitage Lodge vineyard on Gillards Road in Pokolbin. Alisdair farms this block exclusively, managing every vine to ensure the site's specific geology makes it into the bottle.

While some Hunter Syrahs can be light and pretty, the Ferrosol is a different beast entirely. The iron oxide in the soil translates to a wine of intense colour and deep, brooding fruit presence. It is defined by robust, structural tannins that grip the palate, offering a powerful counterpoint to the sandy-soil wines of the region.

It is a serious, site-specific red that captures the personality of this unique pocket of the Hunter Valley.

93 points - "The power of fruit shines through. It’s a beautiful start: ripe mulberry, raspberry and blueberry. Fresh, purple skins, a note of violet. The palate is savoury, meaty, chalky, with sage, cloves, cedar and blood orange acidity. There’s plenty of spice carried on by dark chocolate tannins. The palate is dry with solid concentration and length. This wine offers freshness, energy and depth of flavour. Lovely stuff." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

92 points - "Deep and bright purple colour witn an iodine, peat, seaweed kind of aroma, the palate intense and high-energy with firm tannins and fresh acidity, some notes of ironstone/ferrous rocks powering through the back palate and finish. This has impact and guts and would reward cellaring." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Aeon

The Tulloch name is Hunter Valley royalty, but Aeon is a distinct departure from tradition. This is the personal project of Alisdair Tulloch (fifth generation winemaker and Operations Manager at Keith Tulloch Wines) and his wife Kenisha. Born from a desire to strip winemaking back to its geological roots, the philosophy here is simple: "The variety is the language, but the geology is the story."

Alisdair farms these vineyards himself, focusing on sustainable practices to let the specific soils - whether sandy alluvial flats or iron-rich red earth - shine through. In the winery, he leans heavily into 100% whole bunch fermentation and eschews new oak (or "French trees" as he calls them) in favour of older, large-format barrels. This approach builds structure through stems rather than wood, preserving the delicate nuance of the fruit.

The result is a range of wines that feel distinctly modern yet pay homage to the region's history of "Light Dry Reds." They are savoury, nervy, and lower in alcohol, offering a structural complexity that stands apart from the plush, fruit-driven norm. These are lovely wines from the new generation of the Hunter Valley.
