Description

Col McBryde had his eye on this site for years. The Smith family’s Ruchioch vineyard in Polish Hill River is low-yielding, organically farmed, and tough to get hold of, so when fruit finally became available, he didn’t hesitate.

It sits just up the road from Adelina’s other Polish Hill blocks, with similar soils and elevation, but the vines here crop lighter and deliver extra intensity. The 2024 was picked in the cool, gently pressed, and fermented cold to retain clarity and drive.

The result is a Riesling with real presence. It’s tight and racy, as you’d expect from Polish Hill, but there’s a bit more flesh on the mid-palate - fruit weight without sweetness, and real drive of flavour.

Pure, mineral, and finely tuned. A sharp bit of gear from one of Clare’s best.

"Ultra attractive, a little extra bandwidth and character here; complexity is notable. All that flavour and detail is super impressive and makes for an outstanding wine."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Laser-focused... Delicate and refined, showing lingering notes of green apples, talc and slate. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

"A botanical smelling wine, with herbs and lemongrass, lime and aniseed... plenty of grip and presence, good concentration, saline character, and a firm finish of excellent length. Distinct personality, and very good it is too."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - "From a single site. It feels quite glossy and concentrated, a little slick of fruit sweetness but that's tempered by saline minerality and tightening citrus fruit characters. About all that, the wine speaks volumes in florals, talc, green apple, gingery elements and a kind of lemon meringue note, too. Ultra attractive, a little extra bandwidth and character here; complexity is notable. All that flavour and detail is super impressive and makes for an outstanding wine." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Laser-focused aromas of grapefruit, flint, lemon peel, lime leaves and sea spray. The palate is light-bodied with a high-tension mouthfeel and energetic acidity. Delicate and refined, showing lingering notes of green apples, talc and slate. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

94 points - "A botanical smelling wine, with herbs and lemongrass, lime and aniseed. It has some crunch, a dry martini-like mouth-perfume, something of a peanut character cinched with quinine, plenty of grip and presence, good concentration, saline character, and a firm finish of excellent length. Distinct personality, and very good it is too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Adelina

Adelina Wines, established by Jennie Gardner and Col McBryde, is situated in the Springfarm Valley of Clare Valley. With vineyards dating back to 1910, the estate includes Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Malbec, and a unique field blend. Col and Jennie, both PhDs in microbiology, have transformed the vineyard with organic farming methods, achieving certification in 2020.

Their wines are known for delicacy, purity, and terroir expression, featuring old vine Shiraz and Mataro, exceptional Nebbiolo, and vibrant Rieslings. The 80-year-old Grenache vines produce fine-boned, high-toned wines, while the Shiraz showcases bold flavors and impressive tannins.

Sustainability is central to their approach, with minimal water use, manual weeding, and maintaining native scrub. They are also pursuing carbon-neutral certification. Adelina Wines embodies quality and innovation, offering wines that reflect their unique terroir and sustainable practices.
