Description

The Tangerine Dream is one of the most experimental of the Smallfry wines. After sampling a few things at the Rootstock natural wine festival a couple of years ago, Wayne thought he might try his hand at making an amber wine. This is his eighth dig at the style and it's a beauty.

This skin-contact field blend of Semillon, Pedro Ximenes, Riesling, Roussanne and Muscat is the embodiment of Wayne's creative winemaking exploration, a left of centre amber wine for this region so steeped in tradition.

And quite simply, it is down-right delicious. We love it when winemakers broaden their horizons and just give something a go. Sometimes when you take a chance you can end up in a Tangerine Dream...

    My favourite orange wine

I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to wine so I'm always looking for something new to try. But I always, always come back to the Smallfry. Funky, briney, delicious.

Light and refreshing skin contact, one of my most favourite

Overview
A devastating frost in spring 2024 left meagre resources for the 2025 harvest. Thankfully, the 2024 vintage was still in tank, allowing a blend of the two years to maintain the style and diversity of Ken’s vineyard. Consistency has always been important, and this blend is no exception—straight out of the box.

The vineyard is likely one of the last in the Barossa with plantings of Pedro, Semillon, and Riesling. Harvest occurs throughout vintage: early picks of Semillon for acid, followed by Riesling, some early-picked Pedro, more Semillon and Roussanne, and finally very ripe Pedro for its honeyed ginger flavour. This NV shows the same surprising longevity after opening as past releases.

Colour
Brilliant yellow-orange, with a cloudy appearance.

Aroma
Haystacks and sunlight, talc and lozenge, with orange rind and ginger notes. Slightly reticent at first, but once it opens up, its personality is hard to quieten.

Palate
Full-bodied and dry, with grainy tannins making this a “red drinker’s white.” Multi-layered and rewarding with time in the glass. Shows good length and depth with persistent flavour.

Summary
An approachable, mid-strength orange wine. It bridges the gap between oaky Chardonnay and the more confronting skin-contact whites.
