Description

While Viognier is a relatively recent chapter in Yeringberg’s long history, Sandra de Pury treats it with the same reverence and restraint as her half-century-old vines. In a world where this variety is often known for being oily and overt, Yeringberg’s interpretation is a study in elegance.

The cool, long 2023 growing season was ideal for this style, producing fruit of "understated opulence." Sandra employed a sophisticated harvesting strategy, picking the block at three different ripeness levels over three weeks to capture the full spectrum of the variety. The fruit was crushed and destemmed with some oxidative skin contact, then wild fermented in large-format old oak where it matured for 10 months. Notably, malolactic fermentation was blocked to maintain a razor-sharp line of freshness.

The nose is refined and complex, offering aromas of apricot, honey, and lemon verbena, lifted by delicate notes of white tea, ginger, and orange blossom. On the palate, there is texture and weight, but it is framed by a wonderful line of acidity and "delicately pithy phenolics" that give the wine drive and poise. It is a Viognier of structure and balance, best enjoyed over the next 3–4 years.

96 points - “Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in large-format oak. A bright green gold. A little more restrained, perhaps, than ’23 with its complex bouquet of perfectly ripened apricots, yellow apple, quince and acacia honey. The palate is gently opulent, layered and very well balanced, finishing focused and long. A delicious and heady white wine to enjoy over the next three or so years.” - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - “Floral and lifted aromas of fresh apricots, lavender, fresh flowers, baking spices and pastry. The palate is medium-bodied with a generous texture and vivid acidity. A phenolic grip brings layers of complexity. Such a lovely Northern Rhone-style viognier. Drink or hold.” - Top 100 Wines of Australia 2025 (jamessuckling.com)

Picked at three different ripeness levels over three weeks. All crushed and destemmed with several hours oxidative skin contact. 100% wild ferment in barrel, no MLF, 10 months in large format old oak.

A wine of elegance and finesse in 2023, the long, cool growing season has produced a Viognier of both purity and understated opulence. On the nose, there’s some restraint to the aromas of apricot, honey and lemon verbena, together with hints of white tea, ginger and orange blossom. The palate continues the aromatic theme framed by a wonderful line of moreish acidity and delicately pithy phenolics that provide the wine with drive, poise and balance. A wine to enjoy over the next 3–4 years, but might delight with longer cellaring too. – Sandra de Pury

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
