Description

Sandra de Pury continues to refine the definition of Yarra Valley Shiraz at this historic estate. Now in its 163rd year, Yeringberg has always championed a style of Shiraz that prioritizes perfume over power, and the cool, slow-ripening 2023 vintage was the perfect canvas for Sandra's gentle winemaking approach.

Sourced from vines planted in 1999 across three distinct clones (including a rare '100-year-old' selection), the winemaking here is all about detail. Sandra destemmed the fruit fully but kept a mix of whole and crushed berries to maximise aromatic lift. In a signature touch, she included a tiny co-ferment of Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier (less than 3%) to heighten the texture and floral range. The wine spent 23 days on skins before maturing for 19 months in French oak hogsheads (25% new).

The result is sophisticated and unmistakably Yeringberg. It opens with fresh, lively aromas of blueberry, violet, and fennel, dusted with five-spice and white pepper. The palate is simultaneously silky and serious - laden with inky blue and black fruits but grounded by an earthy, ferrous undertow. It is a mid-weight, graceful wine with gossamer tannins that will drink beautifully from the outset or over the next decade.

"Elegant and perfumed with its aromas of spiced red cherries, raspberries and white and black pepper together with a touch of violets. It’s a little more approachable than the ’22 at the same age, with silken and persistent tannins rounding out a beautifully balanced wine to drink now and over the next seven to 10 years."

95 points - "From vines planted in ’99; contains less than 3% marsanne/roussanne/viognier. A bright crimson red. Elegant and perfumed with its aromas of spiced red cherries, raspberries and white and black pepper together with a
touch of violets. It’s a little more approachable than the ’22 at the same age, with silken and persistent tannins
rounding out a beautifully balanced wine to drink now and over the next seven to 10 years. 95 points." - Philip

94 points - "Subtle aromas of plums, dark cherries, cured meat, wet earth, violets and spices. The palate is medium-bodied with superfine tannins, bright acidity and a soft and seamless finish. Such a lovely mid-weight shiraz with a nice aromatic lift. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Three clones (100-year-old, PT23, 1654). Vines planted 1999. Fully destemmed, with a
mixture of crushed and whole berries. Some Marsanne, Roussanne & Viognier included in the
ferment, less than 3% and not on the label. 23 days on skins, 25% new oak hogsheads, 19
months in barrel.
A vintage that plays on the aromatic elegance and finesse of Shiraz, 2023 has produced a
wonderfully perfumed wine, with savoury depth and concentrated blue fruits. The nose is
fresh and lively, with aromas of blueberry, violet and fennel, along with notes of five-spice
and white pepper. The palate, simultaneously silky and serious, laden with inky blue & black
fruits, has an undertow of savoury, ferrous complexity and gossamer tannins. A sophisticated, mid- weight wine that will drink well from the outset and over the next 10 years or so. – Sandra de Pury

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
