Description

At Yeringberg, the past is always present, and nowhere is that clearer than in the Pinot Noir. Crafted by Sandra de Pury from vines planted between 1969 and 1974, this wine is a direct link to the pioneering days of the modern Yarra Valley. These 50-year-old vines - yielding notoriously low in 2023 - provide the kind of depth and natural balance that only age can bestow, allowing Sandra to craft a wine of immense finesse.

The winemaking is classic and unhurried: fully destemmed and crushed, the fruit spent 9 days on skins before resting for 19 months in French oak (38% new). The result is a wine that marries the brightness of the cool 2023 vintage with the gravitas of old vines.

It opens with pure, lifted aromas of raspberry, red cherry and rose, seamlessly knit with complex notes of Moroccan spice, kirsch and porcini mushroom. The palate is luxuriously velvety yet structured, with a precise line of juicy acidity that drives a long, perfumed finish. It is a structured, delicate affair that will unfurl beautifully over the next decade.

"Old vines, low yields and a cool year have produced another terrific Yeringberg
pinot."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is a very good Pinot Noir, putting on display power, complexity and architectural structure that has it boding well for a long rest in cellar."

"Power, poise and precision are all present, making it highly food friendly."
- Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

96 points - "Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between ’69 and ’74. Fully destemmed and 38% new oak. A bright ruby red. Old vines, low yields and a cool year have produced another terrific Yeringberg pinot. Gently meaty with aromas of black cherry, blueberry, brown spices and lightly crushed violets. Concentrated, structured and long, this kept opening up with air, meaning that, while it can be approached now, you really want to have a bottle or three when it begins to hit its peak over the next five to 10 years plus." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "This is deep and alluring on first look, with dark cherry, pomegranate molasses, and lavender rising gently from the glass before the emergence of nutmeg spice, raspberry coulis, dried rose and a gentle iodine-like minerality
beneath. The palate is structured and powerful with a mouthfilling texture wrapping around morello cherry, red rose, plum and raspberry compote with some rhubarb in support before firm ribbons of stacked grainy tannins frame it up and draw it long. Very long, in fact. This is a very good Pinot Noir, putting on display power, complexity and architectural structure that has it boding well for a long rest in cellar. Drink from 2025-2034." - Tom Kline (Inside Burgundy)

95 points - "Medium deep and vibrant ruby red colour. Dark cherry, undergrowth and Jamon Iberico aromatics. The
palate opens with bright cherry fruits, while layers of cinnamon, anise and clove ebb and flow across the tongue. Notes of jamon and loam deepen the impression. Acidity lingers to lift the middle, while fine sandy
tannins build intensity into a very long finish. Power, poise and precision are all present, making it highly food
friendly." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

Extremely low yield in 2023 (again). 2 clones (MV6 and an old clone from Great Western).
Vines planted 1969-74. Fully destemmed and crushed. 9 days on skins, 38% new oak, 19
months in barrel.
Our new Pinot has finesse, depth and complexity. Pure and bright aromas of raspberry,
red cherry and rose, knit seamlessly with complex notes of Moroccan spice, kirsch and porcini mushroom. The perfumed palate marries the elegance and brightness of the vintage
with the character and depth that come from 50-year-old vines. A lovely savoury structure
and a line of acidity that lifts and sustains a long and perfumed finish. A wine that will unfurl
beautifully over at least the next 10-12 years. – Sandra de Pury

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
