Description

Yeringberg has long held a reputation for finding the magic sweet spot in Yarra Valley Chardonnay - balancing the richness of traditional styles with the tension of the modern wave. In the cool 2023 vintage, Sandra de Pury has leaned into the season’s delicacy to craft a wine of immense finesse and concentration.

The winemaking here is precise and deliberate. The fruit was fully crushed and destemmed before pressing, then settled and racked to barrel. A mix of wild and inoculated ferments, combined with 30% malolactic fermentation and lees stirring (bâtonnage) over 11 months in oak (30% new), has built a wine of texture and complexity without sacrificing its vibrant core.

Initially restrained, it opens with aromas of just-ripe nectarine, white peach and citrus blossom, evolving into savoury notes of oyster shell, honeysuckle and roasted almond. The palate is shaped by a vibrant energy, where a savoury line of grapefruit and pithy lemon zest frames richer notes of nectarine and lightly toasted brioche. It is pure, concentrated, and effortlessly long - a Chardonnay that will drink beautifully over the next 6–8 years.

95 points - "A combination of natural and inoculated ferments, then racked to hogsheads (30% new) and with 30% mlf. A bright green gold. Expressive, with a tangerine, lemon peel and almond-scented bouquet. A little chalkier and more restrained on the palate than the ’22, this very nicely balanced and structured wine should age gracefully over the next five to seven years at least. 95 points. Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Vibrant pale gold colour. Yellow peach, Manuka honey and honey butter lead the aromas in a rich-but- restrained aesthetic. Some peanut brittle and toasted almonds emerge thereafter along with whispers of toffee and smoke. The fruit sits above the savouriness after some air, keeping brightness. The balance of opulence and freshness carries over to the palate – smoked honey, butter, poached yellow apple, yellow peach, almond and praline sit within a lovely creamy texture while a fine weave of acidity pulls at the tongue keeping line and
freshness throughout. There’s seemingly endless length here, it surges through the back palate with the mix of fruit and savouriness still intermingling. A very strong release from an icon of the Valley, balancing flavour and freshness. Drink from 2025-2032" - Tom Kline (Inside Burgundy)

95 points - "Aromas of preserved lemons, salted nuts, stone fruit, river stones and apple blossoms. The palate is medium-bodied with focused acidity and lovely depth of flavor, finishing with a slight phenolic grip. Very pure and giving, with underlying freshness. Classic and delicious. Drink or hold." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
