Description

This is the flagship of the iconic Yeringberg estate, and in 2023 it is a masterclass in the "sculpted yet relaxed" style that Sandra and David de Pury have perfected. Following a season defined by slow ripening and mild conditions, this is a wine of easy harmony rather than brute force.

The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot (13%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Malbec (8%), and Petit Verdot (6%). The fruit was fully destemmed and fermented in small open-top fermenters with hand-plunging, before spending 21 months in French oak barriques (40% new).

It's a beautiful wine, as usual, from Sandra. On the nose, it is plush and inviting, offering classic Yeringberg aromas of blackcurrant and violet mingled with lifted notes of black olive, graphite, and cedar. The palate is fine, supple, and perfumed, showing serious depth without heaviness. Structure but softness too here, framed by a delicate line of refreshing acidity that promises a long life ahead. It is approachable now, but will evolve beautifully over the next couple of decades.

"A wonderfully complex and perfumed bouquetit will provide an enormous amount of enjoyment over the next 10–15 years."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points
"A soft, bright wine from a cool vintage that is constructed with a soft hand."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

97 points - "A blend of 61/13/12/8/6% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/malbec/petit verdot from vines
planted at this historic site from 1969–2000. A bright crimson purple. A wonderfully complex and perfumed
bouquet redolent of blackcurrants and wild blackberry together with new pencil box shavings, sweet spice and
crushed violets. Medium bodied, in the best sense of the term, with
the fruit, oak and seamless tannins coming together as one. It may
not be the most long-lived Yeringberg ever, but it will provide an
enormous amount of enjoyment over the next 10–15 years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 point - "Soft and savory aromas of blackcurrants, licorice, Asian spices, dark
cherries and violets. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with finely
tuned tannins and focused acidity that lead to a bright and plush
mouthfeel. A soft, bright wine from a cool vintage that is constructed with a soft hand. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot.
Vines planted 1969-2000. Different varieties picked as they ripened. Fully destemmed and
crushed. 12-21 days on skins, fermented and hand plunged in small open top fermenters.
40% new oak barriques, 21 months in barrel.
Another wonderful year for our red blend. An elegant wine that will evolve beautifully over
time, enjoyed either on its own or side by side with its 2021 and 2022 peers. On the nose,
plush aromas of blackcurrant and violet mingle with lifted notes of black olive, graphite and
cedar. The palate is fine, supple and perfumed, and also shows serious depth, subtly rich yet
savoury structure and a delicate but defined line of refreshing acidity. An effortless and
harmonious wine that will evolve beautifully over the next 15-20 years. – Sandra de Pury

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
